I thought I had sent my entry but found it on the floor of my van this morning. Now I don't know if I want to mail it or not. How long did it take you guys to get your rocks after you mailed the payment? Not long. A week or so.

Yours all look way worse than what I received. Mine had a couple interesting patterns and colors. I think mine will all tumble well, despite being plain. I would still enter if you haven't already. I think for those of you that got garbage, you just had bad luck. I'm sorry to hear you got stuff like that. Good luck to you all. -Perkins17

There does seem to be a big discrepancy in the material sent out. One would think that they had piles of each type material and it would be a couple of these, a couple of those, etc. sorry you guys got the short end on your material sent.

Are you sure all you folks entered the same contest? Pretty sure I was sent a knife to go into a gun fight. LOL. Chuck

On the sawing vs. grinding issue, what happened is because I didn't have a grinder I felt my only allowed action was cleaving with a hammer. I did a little bit of this but it can only go so far and isn't easy unless there is a dent or crack in the right place. So I asked Feather River last year if I would be allowed to use the lapidary saw I now owned. Can't remember the answer per se, but I'm almost certain it was yes.
Never would have thought about that a saw blade is merely a thin grinding wheel, but there does seem to be some validity to it. The current saw blade I'm using leaves a huge kerf I would estimate at almost 3/16". Indeed at times it feels like pushing a grinding wheel through the material. Also, the side of the blade is stiff enough that with small rocks I can do some shaping with that side too though I rarely bother.

It looks like you got a few decent rocks. I went ahead and dropped my entry in the mail. We'll see what happens!

I think the "dried mud clumps with some tiny pebbles" are rhyolite, but not exactly the kind of rhyolite that is good for tumbling. It should make some nice thick slurry, at least. There appears to be a very sad frog in this one:

Hi all! Long time lurker, first time poster. I entered the contest this year for the first time (I've only been tumbling since July), and have very similar rocks to what everyone else here has posted. I have this one: ..which I threw in the tumbler about a week ago along with the others. However, I decided to pull it out last night to make more room, as I didn't think things were moving around in there as well as I would like. Now it looks like this: ..and you can see the severe undercutting of that white stuff. Anyone else having this happen? I expected it to be much softer so I'm not surprised, but looking through the pictures here, I didn't see if anyone else had gotten a piece like this. Does anyone know what this material is? Basalt, maybe? I'm new to identifying rocks. (Hopefully this works, this is my first time using Cloudinary!)

Good job getting cloudinary going right from the start. Hard to tell what the zebra rock is, but if the white parts are soft and appear to pass through the entire rock, then I would agree with your decision to put that one aside and make room for other rocks.

I was wondering if it's Basalt as well, but since I don't know rocks that well I am afraid to say. Thanks for the pictures. Interesting...

After doing some internet research, I think the white stuff is pumice? I'm not a geologist, but I was reading that pumice can form in basalt. It's certainly disintegrating quickly in the tumbler. I might throw it back in rough later and see if all the pumice will grind out and see what's left. Probably just a big chunk of basalt. But maybe it'll be a shiny chunk of basalt?

The winner deserves respect for tumbling something well, however it isn't a fair competition if everyone doesn't get equal quality rough.

Since many forum users have complained about the inconsistent quality of material that were given. It occurred to me that there are many vendors who sell us tumblers, saws and rocks etc. Has anyone ever asked them to contribute to Feather River Lapidary so the organization can truly run a 1st class World Rock Tumbling Competition. As rock tumblers we spend thousands of dollars on tumblers, rocks and media. Perhaps vendors could provide rock material or equipment to Feather River or even a monetary contribution for the winners.
For one, I would surely buy from companies that contribute to this competition.

I think I'm throwing in the towel on this competition. I don't like to be a quitter but I've done a lot of grinding, rough tumbling, regrinding and rough tumbling. I just don't have anything that I feel is worth continuing with.
