Nice looking, shape and polish. I love the "lightning" running through the Septarians, the slag glass is nice too.

Thanks catskillrocks I believe they are called Lightning Stones locally so you are dead on lol. These are just shown wet, but I'm going to follow Rob's guide on tumbling Petosky stones and hopefully get them to shine.

I think going with Rob's guide on Petoskey Stones is a great idea...I'm assuming you mean the tumbling guide...and not the pole-dancing guide! LOL

That slag glass looks super cool! I always see people being disappointed with finding slag glass, but I would be elated. It really does have great patterns and color in it.
So, you found it waaaay south of Leland, but still found in Michigan... maybe in the mitten?
Have you rolled this yet or did you find it rounded like that (both the septarian/lightning and slag)?

OK I'll ask... which one is which?
They look cool, but I don't know my rocks well enough.

stewdogg I didn't even know what it was until I stumbled on some videos, but it really stands out in the water. Not many bright blue rocks in the mix. I live north of Chicago so that's where I find most of my material. It's interesting I find 10:1 more at one state park vs the other and they are only 25 miles apart or so. The septarians are done with shaping and they don't take terribly long as they are extremely soft rocks, but I need to finish more before moving on to the polish stages. The slag has been rolling for 2-3 weeks, and I'm taking the major blemishes out. Most of them have little bubble indents that I assume are part of the process to create this toxic mess. So I'll just be getting a good shape and then moving them on. doublebluff The septarians are the top, the ones with the "lightning" pattern going on. The slag glass is the multicolored material, it's a byproduct of (don't quote me on this) iron ore smelting production. It gets the name "Leland Blue" (and it really is a bright blue) because it's typically found at a certain section of the lake where production was historically high. So what I found has either washed down shore over the years or there was some level of production in this area Here is a good write up on Leland Blue

I've got too many pokers in the fire...need to finish one group or the other lol I need slag glass in my life. Thanks bro, one more thing to add my list of future tumbles, 😆. Septarian is looking good. I've run mine twice in corn cob with AO 14000, the mud won't polish but the brown & yellow gets shiny.

brybry I may have to try that. I haven't really done a "soft" rock tumble yet so I have some trial and error ahead of me. The corn cob you just run dry, correct?

Yessir. I'm still fine tuning it but it's a dry run.

I'd start with the same amount of polish as you normally would and adjust from there.
I did 24 hrs in the vibe. May try 48 hrs eventually.

The water really helps finding the standouts for sure.
North of Chicago on the east or west side of the Lake Michigan shoreline?

stewdogg I'm on the east side of the lake tucked about an hour NE of Gary, IN. I think if the temps play nice I may venture down and see what I can find...been a while

Nice, I hope the weather is nice enough for a rock field trip this weekend!
I wonder if that stuff is on the western Lake Michigan shoreline anywhere?
