Many of my favorite natural edge cabs started with a end cut that I grabbed and started grinding down through the rind. I'm almost finished with the cab so as long as I don't drop it or misplace and lose it this piece will be my entry. Who here can guess what the material is? The only one who does NOT get to guess is roy because that's who I got it from The resulting cab is a lot smaller because about an inch of the length broke off almost immediately - basically most of the thin end shown in the second photo broke off.

Thunderegg? I'm pretty dang sure that's some sort of agate. I don't know. That looks interesting.

Tommy - Since the material came from Roy, I'm going to guess that material is "a potential winner"! LOL

I'm not even sure if it's considered agate although there is definitely agate present. I only know it by its trade name ... if I flipped it over and showed you guys the flat side it would be instantly recognizable by at least one person for sure, rockjunquie She's the only person I can remember showing off cabs made from it.

My guess is green chrysocolla or variscite.

Live Edge Cab Material. I have several pieces that are cut and polished flats but not shaped or domed plus one nugget. I want to know if doming is all I would need to do to enter one flat into the contest. I would shape the nugget but don’ have much expectation for it. Victor, you've got some nice contenders right there! Flat back...domed...and any part (or all) of the perimeter being a live edge this month, and you're good to go! I think I need to look around today to see what I've got that could work for this one this month. LOL

Was very impressed with the green blobular areas of the slabs. Then realized it was dop wax!

I want to know if doming is all I would need to do to enter one flat into the contest. Nice rocks Victor! From the contest guidelines: Participants may enter ... rock cabochon, consisting of a visible dome on top and a flat backside. Variations on dome heights and girdle styles are permitted and ultimately it's up to the voters to decide if the contest criteria has been met.I don't personally think that flats fall within the description of a cabochon but I am also purposely not very strict about it. To date I have never rejected a single entry and don't plan on starting anytime soon so make the best cabochon shaped stone you can, and dial in your photographs to be as clear and focused as possible and knock the socks off the voters

I was thinking it was "green skin" agate (yes that's a thing) Every now and then my blond birthright rises up and takes control of the brain control levers.

I can't fathom a guess. Stefoinite I later noticed that others like stardiamond have posted Stefoinite cabs but you were the one who introduced it into my brain. I'm working on a cedar fence gate at the moment and my garage looks like a tornado hit it so I'll take proper pictures and insert them into this post later after I can see my workbench again. Edited to add more photos:

Nice! Yeah, I love stefoinite. I never thought of leaving an edge, though. For some reason "live edge" to me always means crystals.

Well maybe I'm confusing what I always called "natural edge" with something else? jasoninsd I've never actually heard of or used the term "live edge" until now so if I'm screwing this up please nip it in the butt. That being said, this piece did have crystals encrusted around the rind and there are still a couple of them on the cabochon that didn't get knocked loose. One of them is visible around the 1 oclock position in the photo.
