I'm just figuring out the photo uploading. I was able to upload two of the pictures I took. Have to figure out how to resize the other two. This is a piece of what I'm calling Poppy Jasper. Not sure of the origin. My guess would be Lake McClure / Hornitos. I found it when I went rockhounding in a customer's garden. I do AC heating repair. I was working on her outdoor unit and saw this along with some other real nice rocks lining her garden. A couple of them had saw cuts on them. I asked her who did the lapidary stuff and she didn't know what I was talking about. Turns out she picked them up from a rental house that they sold after the guy moved out and she didn't want them thrown away. She told me to take anything I wanted. I told her she had some pretty desirable rocks there and she said that's fine she wasn't going to do anything with them. I restrained myself and took this one and one other one. I plan on making her a few cabachons and taking them back to her. I was very excited when I cut the end off and saw what it looked like inside. It's a fairly decent size rock about 7 lb.

Holy smokes, that's so cool! Amazing color and patterns in that. Definitely a special find. She's going to be surprised when you show up with a cab!

The white quarts runs all the way through too. I think I may need to catch up with someone with a decent saw to help me slab this.

I'd say Hornitos is a very good guess. You lucked into some primo rock. I should be so lucky!

rockbrain - Holy Shamoley! You pretty much hit the lottery...by finding a ticket that someone dropped leaving the gas station! That piece is something special! The cab is a great idea to return the favor to her! If she's really offering for you to take more pieces, I don't think you should be feeling guilty. If someone (you!) doesn't do something with pieces like this, isn't it kind of a waste? Everything happens for a reason...so there must be a reason you stumbled into this find...

Ok, so take her some cabs, and then you won't feel bad taking every last lapidary grade rock in her rock garden. I agree with not being greedy, but if she has no use or interest in them, you've got to clean up!

Hornitos poppy from the north end of Hunters Valley. No doubt about it. That's the good old stuff from the original find too. Good catch. I was at an old rock yard one time in the Calif central valley and spotted a beautiful boulder of a poppy I'd never seen before sticking up in the garden. Tried to buy it with no luck. Very frustrating! Very lucky you ran into such a generous person.
