I received a gift certificate for Christmas and have been itching to get over here, roughly an hour drive from my place.
First the shop. A while back, this used to be 90% consignment and 10% rocks. A few years ago they kicked the antiques and went full Rocktard, a wise decision. What consignments are left are individual collections divided into cases. Some are local (Michigan) while a majority is probably stuff you guys are used to seeing out west. They had a dozen or so Lortone 3A in stock as well. Overpriced, but impressively in stock .
Some splash copper from the U.P He finally got a box of scraps out after opening a dozen cases for me. Rockhound baked goodness ready to be served (And a free polished stone!)

Nothing as fun as shopping for rocks.

Thanks for sharing the pics of the shop Chad! It's cool to see the inside of a place like that. I think people would be very surprised at how small The Rock Shop's brick and mortar store itself really is...
Nice batch of slabs...and the three "big boys" are going to make killer tumbles!

I'd say you are safe calling the questioned slab, palm wood. You had fun and thats what gifts are supposed to allow.

Agree on the palm wood.
So, for your gift certificate you got a nice trip to the store where you passed away the time checking out rocks? Sounds like fun to me and a great gift.

I can't wait to see how those big boys tumble! Based on the patterns that are showing, they have incredible potential!

So this shop in particular had a bunch of calcite. Red, green, yellow, orange, on and on...
Is calcite something that is doable?

I thought those pics looked familiar. My Wife and I visited in the fall while in MI. They had no slabs priced and I was unable to find anything nice. Looks like you had way better luck.

Brian, jasoninsd When we are in geriatric pants, I'll send you after photos I was going to add something along the lines of “in the next year or two” but didn’t want to sound too negative. Those look like they would be worth the wait.

I was pretty patient and spent a couple hours there. The box full of slabs was the winner, some of those had really old tags on them. I imagine they'd been tucked away for a while.
