Sure looks like Stone Canyon or Stony Creek Jasper from California.

I'm going with Stone Canyon for the win! LOL
You hit the jackpot right there! Those look like really good pieces of SC! I want to go "hounding" where you go Quartz! LOL

Awesome! That was what popped into my head too! I’m so unfamiliar with lapidary materials that I psyched myself out of calling it that. I even told my son, who works with me that it could be from somewhere like Stone Canyon lol. It’s a good solid piece, the only fractures I see in it are all re-healed. Thanks, you guys are the greatest!

Thanks, you guys are the greatest! I've come back a couple times to look at the pics of this one. I've had several pieces of Stone Canyon - so, not an expert, but I've seen good and bad pieces. This one really looks like a spectacular piece! It looks super solid, and that one end looks like it has some nice orange tones in it! It really looks like a winner winner chicken dinner! What are your plans for this beast? Are you going to break it down and tumble it? You could definitely get some decent sized tumble pieces out of that behemoth!

Stone Canyon. I really like brecciate specimens. and Stone Canyon is pretty desirable in these parts.

You had me wondering for a little while, Scott.
I got some nice big slabs like those from stonesthatrock years ago but they were in Mesa, Arizona and it looks like you are not.

Being I’m in So Cal I’d say it’s a given this is Stone Canyon as the consensus says. It’s 2” wide and about 6” long at the longest point and as you can see in the pics it’s already been sawed on both sides. After a little practice with my 10” saw I may make slabs out of this. probably won’t try anything further than that till I wreck a bunch of inferior material first. Kinda seems too nice of a piece to bust up for tumbling that’s for sure.

Yup, I'd go with stone Canyon too. Always hard to tell though, as Stone Canyon type jasper occurs elsewhere in the Franciscan Formation. The Big Sandy Creek location and Creston locations both haver identical material and of course, it also shows up on a lot of beaches from Monterey County to Ventura County.

Interesting point that similar material is found elsewhere in the formation. That would be a good topic for another thread.
We got a couple of slabs with red breccia from Christopher several years ago. He said it was Franciscan.
I think everyone likes good Stone Canyon (like the chunk posted by quartzilla) and would benefit from seeing variations and "imposters".

Yeah, the red brecciated form is found often at Creston and near Coalinga. Gem club at the latter place used to have field trips for the red material. Named after a ranch where it is found but danged if I can remember the name of the place. Good red brecciaed jasper is also found in the Franciscan Formation at Pope Valley and a dead ringer for Stone Canyon has been found near the marina at East Palo Alto. Big Sandy has some of the best Stone Canyon type jasper I've ever seen.

Yeah - Coalinga!
I'd like to see some of the other "Stone Canyon". If I get to it before someone else does, I'll start a thread with a couple of slabs.
