Local storage wars type guy got a bunch of rough material. Howellite nodules, slabs, and these in the picture. LMK what you think

There is probably 100 lbs plus of the material in the first 2 pics. Almost a milk crate full of howelite nodules, some are cut. Various slabs, some appear to be plume agate and various jaspers. 1 piece of what looks like well agatized Dino bone about the size of a small lemon. He also scored a whole table full of Mexican geodes, a couple have light amethyst. Some mineral specimens also which the nicest would be a big cabinet piece of purple with yellow fluorite. Also a large piece of what’s labeled as aventurine that’s a little bigger than a softball but looks like no aventurine I’ve seen being very bright green. So green I assumed it was something man made when I first seen it.

I’m contemplating buying the lot of cutting material but with very little labeled I’m not sure if it’s gonna be worth it. He knows very little about rocks but does know some of this stuff is valuable. Many of the slabs have prices on them from anywhere from 1.50 to 8 dollars. Ditto for the geodes, many of the larger ones have 35 to 65 dollar price tags per half from the previous owner.

First picture looks to be either Wildhorse or Cripple Creek picture jasper. Second looks to me to be Rainbow Ridge (aka Rainbow Ledge) jasper from California. My knowledge of prices is old so no help there. I'd check E-bay for those.

I’ve looked these up and saber52 appears to be spot on as usual. I’m thinking of going and offering him 250 for the rough stuff. That would be a screaming deal if I could get it and I can share the wealth so to speak. There is chunk of rhodonite that’s about 15 lbs in with the lot that I like. Mostly black but may get pinker in the middle. If I do I will get a pic of the so called aventurine and see what y’all think. If it’s actually real material the color is better than I’ve ever seen. A lot of this stuff looks like it’s been boxed up for years so who knows what’s all there or where it’s from. Could be a party here trying to ID everything.

Sounds like fun. Don't bid the kid's college fund, but your beginning bid should not hurt you too badly if any of it is what you suspect. Taking it all makes it easier for the seller.

Mel beat me to it. I concur those first ones are Cripple Creek Picture Jasper. I've got several pieces - one really large one. It does polish quite nicely! I hope you're able to snag a deal on the rough. It'd be a fun ID party!

I have learned not to buy leftovers, that after others have picked thru unless I see something intriguing. I also don't buy hunks of rock that have had a window cut by someone knowledgeable (like a rock shop owner), unless I recognize they did it wrong. Good luck with your purchase, but don't get overly excited and pay too much. Lots of good rocks are for sale out there

Just a bit of info. A lot of rhodonite that has sat out in a rock yard oxidizes black on the exterior due to manganese content. If it has sat out it should be chipped or windowed to see the interior which might be much nicer than you think.

Pulled. I bought the lot so spent a little more than I wanted but it was actually cheaper than cherry picking it. I’ve already found stuff in there that I didn’t see initially.

Congrats. Could the brown/tan/cream/orange one with the crystal center be pet wood?
Looks like a lot of nice material.

Congrats. Could the brown/tan/cream/orange one with the crystal center be pet wood? Looks like a lot of nice material. It’s definitely petrified wood. There are several pieces and slabs in the lot. Most wood I got in this deal looks a lot different. Some of it would be specimen grade IMO. It looks like it would separate if you tried cutting/tumbling it.

#1 looks similar to some dendritic common opal from Burro Creek. #2 looks like some kind of crinoids. #9 is oolitic limonite from Bristlecone Pine area of CA. #12 is Bruneau Jasper
