The first slab came from Brent ( Starguy). The second slab came from brybry. So this one is REALLY weird. I made a cab from the material and the whole time I was working it, it felt slimy...like it was covered in Dawn dish soap or saw oil. It wasn't though. My thought is it has to have some alkaline properties... I wish I knew the original source of the materials to narrow things down, but I don't. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I checked the ad from eBay and seller doesn't remember where he got it from. This truly was the oddest material I've ever cabbed. I've worked Serpentine that "appeared" soapy...but the surface of this material flat out felt like it became "slimy"...

I doubt if this will help you narrow it down but I've worked with marble that feels similar to what you describe.

I doubt if this will help you narrow it down but I've worked with marble that feels similar to what you describe. So I've never worked marble...unless Picasso Marble counts. And it wasn't anything like that. This is really going to sound weird...but it felt like I was grinding plastic the whole time I was working this.

I was rushed yesterday so just to expand on what I was thinking - I have found that when wet grinding marble it releases a lot of opaque colored (gray/white) slippery minerals that remind me of holding wet clay. Being a softer material the release of color and slippery feel continues up into the hire grits - 3000? That being said your 2nd slab looks more like a banded Onyx - and I don't want to steer too far out of my technical knowledge lane but those solid greenish looking bands could be marble or calcite. I have no idea on the first piece. Clearer pictures would help

I haven't worked any marble or calcite (other than Picasso Marble - and that didn't react like this one did) to try and compare...but I like the way you're thinking! I'll get a better picture of that first slab a bit later.

Yeah I actually meant to say that Picasso marble is not the quite the same for whatever reason. It has a bit of a slippery feel but it's harder and not shedding as much material.

This'll sound weird...and I swear the only thing I've been smoking is cigarettes...but everything about that second piece, from feeling the slab, to the way it ground, to the way it polished, the two words that kept coming to mind - for whatever reason - were "creamy" and "plastic-like"...

The first piece reminds me of Burro Creek Pasetelite, the second piece looks like serpentine from the Young Az area. I have similar pieces to the both of these that are self collected.

That first one could be chert similar to what we find in the Texas Hill country. The veins and nodules often have a coating of the limestone in which they originate and when you grind it the limestome powders into gooey caliche, the bane of all of us rural Texas ranch residents. That freaking slime hardens to a crust over your entire car.

You actually may have ID'd that first one! There was a piece of Burro Creek Brecciated Jasper sent also. I just looked up Pastelite, and there were a couple pieces that did resemble the one I pictured! I could see how that second one could be serpentine! Thank you SO much for posting this! I haven't worked that first piece yet, so the "slime" actually comes from that second piece.
