I think the next time someone posts a picture of a cab on this thread, it gets entered.

OK, since no one stepped up to the square yet, I guess I'll start it off.
Not sure if this qualifies for the contest, as it's not technically a "cab" but it is square ..........everywhere.
I made this little cube of Washington River Jade, just for fun, to see how " square " I could get it.
It's not perfect, but it's pretty close.
And I actually was able to get a sort of polish on it.
It's about 3/4" square.
If this doesn't count, please feel free to disqualify it - I was just trying to be square with you all.

Patty that is really cool!
All the rules for the contest are on the 1st page. We definitely encourage new participants!

Kind of what I figured , as it's not a jewelry ready cab. I guess it fits in the category of wine bottles and taxi cabs.
Looking forward to seeing the entries. Patty

liveoak technically you could set that cube for a ring or pendant, so my vote is it's a valid entry. Adding pics of the rough and preform would be a plus.

So this boulder opal was going to be my entry but actually got worse as I went along. Probably the lowest dome I've ever done (and yes I'm aware I missed some scratches in the center) so I'm proud of that. Voids opened up as I went along so I'm scrapping this and finding something else to cut

liveoak that entry is kinda dicey. When you say "washington river" does that mean from a river in WA state? there are sone pretty awesome nephrite varieties in WA. Seriously I have seen cube shaped focal pieces for jewelry, and IMO that is the definition of what a "cab" is. I have some square red brass wire that would make a pretty nice cage style wire wrap for that. I know I get some disagreement on the pure definition of cabochon, but for the purposes of competition, the AFMS has categories other than "domed top, flat back" that they refer to as cabs, many of them. To my knowledge there is pretty much no such thing as disqualification from this contest, the number of votes you may recieve are entirely the peoples choice.

Awhile ago I purchased some " Washington River Jade" from a guy on e-bay . I got a little over enthusiastic & got a bunch. He told me that he finds the rocks on the river. Only problem with it, is that it's difficult ,to say the least, to get any kind of polish that isn't either dull or orange peeled OR both. My cube is the best polish I've gotten on it so far- go figure - but I'm still trying.
I made it on my old Craftsman Flat lap and tried polishing it on my 1" belt sander.
I'm thinking the cube could make a nice pendant.
It was a challenge from my husband, to see if I could make it as square as possible-
He told me that an old time test for a machinist apprentice was that they were given a steel bar , a hack saw & a file, and told to make a perfect cube.
Of course I had to deduct points that I used my rock saw & flat lap- no hand cutting & polishing here.
Here's the piece it came from (ctr front), as well as others in the background

Alright since I abandoned the BO Ali had a great idea to keep it flashy and cut a piece of Wausau Moonstone. May as well keep it challenging, right! This stuff is so prone to coming apart at the cleavage lines. My preform came apart in 3 pieces, but thankfully it was before I even touched the wheels with it. I forgot how much of a challenge it was to keep the sides straight and square to the other sides & for an extra challenge I cut this completely on the wheels. Anyway here's my rectangle moonstone cab. Thanks for looking and good luck everyone!

Rockoonz - I like what you had to say about liveoak's cube...it's up to the member to enter what they want...and up to the voters to determine its proximity to the requirements. liveoak - I love that cube! I say if you want to enter it, then by all means! woodman - I'm dying to see that Stinking Water Plume! MsAli - That cab is gorgeous! The material is beautiful! I like how you took the overhead pic with the square! Good idea! NDK - I see the heartaches continue with your potential cab entries! Nice choice on the second one! Beautiful! (Digging through the old threads, I've seen YOUR posts in the wrap section of your first wraps - way back in the day! )

That cab gave me the fits. I almost quit, but NDK encouraged me to finish. I just was struggling with the girdle. Not an excuse but I find my hands don't work too well anymore, especially when it's cold and I also have a really messed up elbow so working the angles is a struggle sometimes. I'm just getting to be a baby and need warm weather 😌

liveoak WA and canadian Jade is the worst for orange peel, personally I have found SiC sanding belts are better than diamond to prevent it, along with a light touch and patience. Linde A or chrome oxide on leather polish much better than cerium, let it get hot.
