I am regrinding my big pebble. Since I cannot place a photo here, there does not seem to be much point in a discussion. The image is on a local drive, and I placed it on my cloud subscription as a "shared" item. I guess somebody is aware of "Preview" not working? Image link seems to have problems as well.

Are you talking about your Cloudinary account? If so, Tommy may be able to help you out.

Sorry you're having trouble - posting photos is the single biggest issue we have with the Proboards software and as far as I can tell there is no end in sight. This is why we are currently using the Cloudinary.com upload widget that integrates a drag and drop feature into the forum and everyone using it has control of their own photo gallery on Cloudinary. It takes a little bit to set up but once it's working it's a wonderful option for uploading photos here. Posting photos from your own source (3rd party hosting) will only work if it's publicly accessible via a URL or web address to where the photo is found. "Preview" only works if the URL is valid and the photo is found, otherwise it will just give a broken image box.

No luck. I looked at Cloudinary. There are three options. I don't know which to use...

The Big PebbleIf you click on the link above, you should be able to see my pebble. It is "ImgBB" just in case you get a warning screen. I am curious as to the composition of this rock.

That's a nice pebble sir. Glad you figured out a way to post your pictures.

What do you think it is? Where is it from. Bases on the colors in your photo it could be lots of things. Do tell us more.

I am not very good at identifying rocks and minerals, but this looks like granite to me. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can chime in.

Now that everyone can see it... At the time I took this photo, it was 70 mm on its long axis and weighed a half-pound. It has sat on my desk for several years as it is in the photo. I decided to rework it. I ran it a week with 46/70 grit. Some may think this is too course. Whatever the composition is, this rock is really hard. Now, it is running an extended length with 60/90 grit. I check it every four days to (a) check the progress and size and (b) to see how much grit is left. I cut my grit usage back to half because I was throwing too much out at change time. Until a few hours ago, I was using pellets exclusively as filler. I visited a nearby creek bed and found some nice smaller rocks to use in the mix. These are not limestone. I can tell the difference by looking. I added three each of larger ones, mid-size, and smaller ones. Pellets are costly and grind away rather fast with course grit. I would prefer to save them for 120/240 and 500 grit. I have some 1,000 grit Aluminum-Oxide I have never used. I began all this on March 10th. As of today, 0.5 mm has been removed. It is hard to see in the photo. There are hundreds of tiny pits all over the rock. It is my hope to remove them by taking off some of the outer surface. Perhaps 1 mm, or maybe a little more. It is possible this rock is full of tiny air bubbles. It has the appearance of being sedimentary and metamorphic/igneous. Only time will tell how it will appear. I want to personally thank the person who managed to get the photo to appear.

60/90 is complete. The rock is much smoother to the touch. Now, it's on to 120/220. I have found the best way to inspect it is to take a photo and look at it on my computer screen. After this is the jump to 500. What I have is very dark gray. It seems like there should be something in between. Somewhere around 350 I believe. As far as I can tell, nobody makes it. The long axis length is now 69 mm.
Something I have been aiming to ask: Say a person is halfway through a grind and the power fails. What happens to the mix in the barrel if there is no movement for six hours, for example?

It is red granite.

Agree on the red granite ID. Power failure/no movement in barrel doesn't hurt anything. Just shake it up and put back in the base. No 350 grit stage has ever been run in my tumbler. Are you letting the 220 run for a week or more? Good luck getting this finished!

Everything settles. When the power comes back on, shake the barrel and let it roll.

Are you letting the 220 run for a week or more? Good luck getting this finished! Thank you for the reply! I just began the 120/220 run. I plan to check it every 4 days to see how it's doing. I went to Lowe's earlier and found some marble chips. I didn't realize 0.5 cubic feet would weigh 40 pounds or more. They're just about the right size. Some as small as an inch. Other's larger, perhaps two inches. They were really gritty when I took some out of the bag. I washed them several times, and put the remnants in with my used grit collection in a cat-litter jug. I had to throw out half of the ceramic pellets from the previous grinds. They had became too small and hard to deal with. Pellets are about $7 a pound. The bag of marble chips was $5.50. I certainly have enough to last a very long time. I allowed the 60/90 to run for 9 days. I will let the current grind run for more than 7 days. My tumbler is on my kitchen table. I get used to the sound, and miss it when it's not running. I asked about the power outage issue because I was afraid the mix would solidify like concrete. There was some nasty thunderstorms in my area last night. A lot of folks around the area have no power at the present time. I would have periodically done a shake-up on the barrel every few hours.

I managed to muddle through the Cloudinary setup. All I had to do was to copy and paste the image address from Cloudinary and use the "Image Insert" to get it here.

If you are using a computer when you post, the easier way is to just click the Cloudinary Upload button (top right), navigate to your picture, click upload and it automatically inserts the picture in your post. You'll see a link but not the picture until you hit the Create Post button.

Thank you! Perhaps you could answer my question above in bold yellow text... The muck settles to the bottom and starts to set up. If you start the tumbler again soon shake it and break it loose and keep rolling. I have bought used tumblers that still had dried loads in them. It will eventually work up but you may have to take it out and break it up if it dries out. A day or two with out power no problem usually. Glass muck sets up sooner from what I have seen.

Granite for sure. THe little "pits" you see are undercutting of the softer material (Mica I think). It will take a shine but you will always (unfortunately) have those little pits. I really love polishing granite as it is one of the few rocks I find readily around here.
