This is the third blow-out Ive had on my Thumler's A-R2. The first one had obsidian in it so I figured that was the cause but the other two did not.
Yes I have a picture. (hope this works)
It may be something to do with the lid and I've sent some information to the manufacture and I'm waiting to hear back.

What happened to the lid? Did it blow off or rub a hole in the middle?

What happened to the lid? Did it blow off or rub a hole in the middle? The lid popped off over night and I had checked if before going to bed. I don't think it was a pressure issue, I had drilled a small hole in the center of the lid and covered it with electrical tape to watch for pressure. The tape had not ballooned out at all. I think it's an issue with the new molded lids.

Are you by chance using ingawh Metamucil trick to make your slurry thicker?

Yea it kind of sounds like it. I don't have that exact model but I'm not a huge fan of their setup. Mine has the screwclamp to seal. I've had times where if it's not fully pressed down or tightened far enough it will leak, but I've never had a full blowout like that.

What did you use to clean your rocks after the last stage? I am wondering if something is causing a chemical reaction making gas.

Most any metallic content [iron or aluminum especially] of the rocks or slurry will cause gas; I had probably a record-breaking blowout once because I put slurry from a vibe lap in the tumbler barrel. Advisable to turn the cap side of the barrel away from the motor/drive side of the base.

Interesting... that has happened twice for me, same tumbler barrels, over the last month or so. It just starts leaking. The first time my round "retaining ring" popped off just a bit, maybe an inch of the ring was off. The second time it just leaked. Nothing added except grit/water. Once with hard rocks, once with soft rocks.
Overall, I like the tumbler. Hopefully this is not a consistent problem.

I think I read you contacted the company but if you are going to use it till a determination is made maybe check it daily and burp it. That might just fix the problem. Maybe the leaking is pressure build up in the barrel and it is trying get the air out. π€

I have one of their barrels I bought because someone posted it would fit a spare tumbler base I had. Took one look at the lid and said I will never use this thing. I should post it over in the trade section and try to trade it for Loretone parts. The lid design turned me off from ever buying any Thumblerβs products.

Glass, obsidian, and porous rocks are bad about excess gas. I currently am running glass with 30sic and the bottom of the barrel expands after a few days. Have had to burp it 1-2 times a week now for the past 3 weeks. Could be a lid issue, but obsidian does tend to build up quicker than agates

I will say, even with these little hiccups, I like my Thumlers a lot.

I have older (10 plus years) thumlers barrels so this may not be as accurate but just a couple things I want to note: ALWAYS point the barrel lid end of the barrel away from the motor side (the picture shows why lol). Grit in the motor will spell the end of the sealed bearings in a matter of days. I ALWAYS add a little borax to my mix (not sure why but I have not had a blow out ever). The rubber retaining band that seals the barrel to the lid will stretch out. It will still feel tight but when compared to a new one there is a huge difference. I had a set of barrels (my oldest ones ironically) that leaked no matter what I tried. I had convinced my self that the barrels had rips in the end and was about to toss them when I talked to SHawn (The Rock Shed). He suggested I try new lid bands and added them to my order. YUP that was all it took. My bands were about 5 years old and had seen constant duty and were just stretched out. Odd thing is I have not had any other leakers since replacing those 2 bands. All my barrels are well over 10 years old now but I do have 2 barrels for each step now so they only see 1/4 of the amount of use.

Someone in tumbling tips and tricks, pinned to the top of the rock tumbling section, said they start with hot water. Must be like old-fashioned canning, hot in creates a suction and draws the canning lid down and seals it. π€ Maybe that would help.
