I was staring at the first set of pictures and saw stones on the surface that I would pick up and then looking at your buckets, you sure got your share of excellent rocks. Congrats on a successful trip. Wish I could have crossed the border. Next time. Greig

Not sure their quality but I had to dig deep for them, don't even know if they have color

That's what the Navy can do to you. I'm usually pretty good about mining my manners. I am glad you found some rock you could make pretty.

It was so nice meeting you today. Only wish my husband hadn't taken such a horrible photo. Thats why I stay behind the camera. As for the parking lot. How were you supposed to see the rock and choose what you'd like?

Congrats on your trip. Are you a good cook ? You can heat treat this flintridge material nursetumbler to end up with some even wilder colors. Roy is using a fancy kiln in the 1st video but flintridge is easy to heat treat in a cheap turkey baster. Best to find a video on "heat treating flint using a turkey baster". It takes about 30 to 40 hours, bring the heat up slow and cool down fairly slow. It will also soften the rock a bit and speed up your step 1 part of the tumble. It will turn greens and deeper reds and oranges, it is amazing what colors it will turn. Must have a lot of irons in it.

Best is before. The heat often colors the outside layer of the rock with a richer color layer that makes interesting patterns after the tumbler grinds the high spots and edges of the rock away therefore removing the richer outside color layer and exposing the inner colors. Thin pieces color richer than thicker chunks. With a little practice you can tinker with the color depths as related to the size of chunks. The colors often depend on the iron content. Or type of iron. Or perhaps other metal salts. Flintridge is full of salts. This is some fossil coral. The first 18 or so photos were cooked, the rest are not with exception of a few more red/orange chunks. www.flickr.com/photos/67205364@N06/sets/72157646653965727

I had a lot of fun heat treating and playing with colors nursetumbler. I had only done a couple of flintridge loads. It cooks at a lower temp than the coral making it less demanding of heat needs. It is also easy to tell if it was heated too much as it will turn mostly red. I had cooked coral in a kiln, but also (in the early cooks)in my wife's counter top 1/4 convection oven. With her permission of course. She finally sent me outside and asked me to get an alternate heater Often filling her pie pans with clean sand covering the rocks to be cooked. A bag of sand required. Native man heated their flints and cherts w/a campfire for better 'workability' and perhaps colors: The rocks can be covered with 2 to 3 inches of dirt(pref. sand) with a campfire built on top. Youtube has videos.
