I wanted to post some pictures of the wonderful trip I had with my son right at the beginning of the pandemic. He lives in Florida near Orlando. We made the journey down south to the Peace River and went with a canoe rental place where they take you up River and a bus in drop you off. You have the whole day to get back to where you started and can do whatever you want along the way. This was a first time trip for both of us. We didn't come back with anything incredible but we found a lot of stuff and had a great time. The first pic is the outfitters. This is the dock where we started and ended up. Great

Total haul was a bunch of dugong bones, which is a prehistoric manatee. A chunk of bird bone of some sort and a whole bunch of small shark teeth, ray teeth and miscellaneous bones.

I have fond memories of floating & camping on the peace river. Nice haul :-)

I saw this getting posted last night...but I wanted to wait until I knew you were done posting pics. Thank you for posting this trip report! That place looks amazing! Shark teeth are always cool...and the other fossils are a bonus! HOWEVER...I don't think I could go into gator infested waters in a "flimsy" canoe...I'd need something the size of a cruise ship! LOL

Yea, I always have a few issues when posting any quantity of pics. It took a while! Not sure why I was never real concerned about the gators (ignorance and stupidity?) We would just jump right in and start sifting. I did dance like a little girl and walked on the surface of the water for a couple of feet when something bumped into the back of my leg when I was in a thigh deep section with a decent current. A few of the teeth I actually found a couple of days later when my wife and I went down to Venice Beach. I enjoyed the river a lot more.

Most of the time alligators are more afraid of you than you could be of them, most of the time. Unless they are getting fed, have babies nearby, OR know you're a tourist, OR are foolishly walking a little dog along the lake shore (a favorite food item)
Patty... a Florida resident & long familiar with alligators.

I lived in Orlando when I was in the 5th grade. We waterskied a lot. It was a rarity to see a gator then. What's funny is one lake we skied in was on the air force base where we were stationed. Once in a while someone would spot a gator and everyone would get out of the water. As soon as it submerged everyone would get back in. If you can't see it it can't hurt you!

rockbrain this looks wonderful. I have to go to Orlando and gotta say, I would love to do that trip. The gators remind me of my trips to okefenokee swamp. I'm going to be in S Ga as well, I'm going to try finding spots to hound. I'm sure I'll post soon. Don't want to hijack thread, just want to say that must have been a blast.

JR8675309 You didn't say when you're going but you need a permit to collect. It's inexpensive but might take a couple of weeks to get so you need to order well in advance. I think it was $12 and it's good for 2 years. I don't think you need it for sharks teeth as it's for vertebrate fossils. It would be a shame to not have it and come across a mammoth tooth or something like that. Also, I know water level makes a difference. You don't want it too deep! Of course I would imagine the flow is down in the summer. Also there's the temperature. I was there in Feb and it was perfect. I need to get back to Orlando too. I have a new grandson that showed up about 2 weeks ago!

Is that for the Withlacootchee or for the river you were on in Orlando?

liveoak sorry, but I beg to differ… believe me when I say it’s not possible for a gator to be more afraid of me than I am of it!🤣🤣

Fear is healthy & keeps us alive
I always think, if you take the dangerous wildlife out of the picture ( alligators, grizzly's, etc) the outdoors just become kind of boring. Unpredictable is what makes nature interesting.
Patty, hoping NOT to get bit by an alligator now

Lions, tigers and bears may have all the fun but the mighty mosquito gets the job done.

How funny And true- I bet that more people have died (and definitely been more annoyed by)
from mosquitos, then any great beasts !
