My best guess is that it's not pet wood. The banding appears to my eye to be more in line with several kinds of rock formation rather than growth patterns of wood.

Hate to be the killjoy, but I agree with RWA3006. I don't think that's petrified wood, sorry . It's still a nice rock though!

Thanks for the perspectives! I can't tell if the green is in the rock or from algae coating the rock. I don't think I will do anything with it except put it in the garden.

There's an area in eastern Oregon that has a lot of sedimentary material that looks just like that, we call it "fooled ya". Like victor1941 said, cut it and have a look.

The beach is in Puget Sound. Maybe this is the way I get into rock cutting. Never done it before.
