Some of the quartzite and wood bruised a bit in step 1 at 60 rpm. Surprisingly the glass did quite well but polish is not up to snuff. I normally run quartz and glass in step 1 at 25 rpm. Looks like the Alabama pet wood got beat up too and should be run at 25 rpm too(the reason for the test) some of the quartzite bruised badly Some of the wood a bit beat up, polish is meh Some wood did ok but polish is meh Surprisingly the glass is free of bruises, polish is decent Other quartzites were free of bruises but where the fractures end at the surface a wider white band is left. Agates/cherts/coral are easy, they did fine. glass done at the slower 25 rpm has better polish:

Hi jamesp, ouch! 60 RPM hurts. That glass is so nice. The holes in some of the glass is for a leather cord to wear as a necklace? Great polish! Thanks for posting.

jamesp was this just water and grit or did you add anything else to the slurry? I always find your tumbling insights to be useful.

Clay was added to form slurry but it has been so long since tumbling I had forgotten my recipe. It was on the 'thin' side for sure. At 60 rpm the slurry needs to be well adjusted to the thick side at such high speeds. I was also using some larger 8 inch barrels that I had not figured the amount of clay to add since I rarely use them. It was more of a rough test tumble to see how the local petrified wood would handle a rough/fast tumble since I am tumbling a lot of it. The glass was a surprise, I figured it would have been heavily bruised go figure. Ha, I was in a hurry and was using 3 cups of super coarse SiC on 22 pounds of rock. I think that is a heavy dose.

Thanks dshanpnw, yes those holes were drilled prior to tumbling for cordage. If you do similar it is better to drill the hole and then use a 45 degree diamond bit and countersink the holes to avoid chipping during tumbling(on glass anyway).
