You could try about a 10% Muriatic acid/90% water mix ashley. Best to try it on a small area first. Use extreme caution handling the muriatic. If the coral is has a low silica content it may dissolve more than it cleans.

The coral looks silica replaced. Try the hardness test on a piece of glass. If it scratches then assume you have silica replaced fossil. If it were a petoskey stone, (calcite replaced), I would not use acid. But jamesp 's should clean off any limestone. If you wish to whiten after using the muriatic acid use oxalic acid it is good for removing iron stains.

It may depend on the brand of muriatic acid. Yes, oxalic acid is a great idea for cleaning.

Getting the calcium carbonate off first prevents Calcium Oxalate (kidney stones) from forming on the outside of geodes etc.
jamesp you are also correct that some muriatic has more iron in it and can stain yellow as well.

Use extreme caution handling the muriatic. If you do use muriatic acid, please be VERY careful! It is nasty stuff. I use to handle it back in the 1980s and 90s and I can attest to just how bad it is... even the low concentrations consumers can buy OTC today. Believe it or not, back-in-the-day, large pools with alkaline water supplies used it to control the pH of the water. I had more than my share of burns and ruined clothing.

There is a rule for pouring acid into water - either the water is poured into the acid ot the acid is poured into the water. Maybe you know the answer LazerFlash.

I'll tell you the way I was taught to remember it: "First the water, then the acid, or it won't be placid."

Thank you LazerFlash! I will probably steer clear of it just because of having little people. Might just do some soap water and vinegar for now.

Or, if you're having a flashback from the sixties: "Drop acid, not water!"

LazerFlashLol, my tiny humans are very resourceful and inquisitive! They would certainly find it, especially the 1 1/2 year old and his big sister helper who’s 3. 🫣😂
