I've read some of the information on this site about the Raytech TV-5 vibratory tumbler but am looking for some additional information. The biggest concern I have is "how noisy is this tool" and what grit formulas work best for you. My plan is to use my rotary tumbler for the first stage and then the vibe for 2 thru 5 stages. Do you use it completely dry or do you make a slurry? What is your formula? Your input and suggestions will be appreciated. By the way, The "lot-o" and ultra vibe are a bit pricey and seems like "out of stock" everywhere I look. I guess that tells me what the favorite is.
Thanks for your input.

The Raytech was just to noisy for me. Ran it with a slurry Ann I could hear the rattle upstairs pretty loud. Ended up with a Lot-O tumbler which is much quieter.

The tv-5 is louder than my uv-45. Plastic bowls will do that.

I'd be interested in your recipe jasonshort, I've been thinking of picking up the Raytech TV-5 to use after running a batch in my rotary. Thanks, Patty

I prefer ceramic media over plastic. It is not recommended for this machine. I passed on it for this reason. My 2 cents…

I have had a TV-5 for a little while now. Several batches run through... It is very noisy; I will not run it in the house -- it's banished out to the garage. But it does a good job. The plastic bowls are a problem, not just because of the noise -- they are starting to deteriorate. When they're no longer usable, I won't replace them -- I'll replace the whole unit with something quieter.

I just sent a reply to Jason in regards to the TV-5 vibe and noise. Has anyone tried spraying the exterior of the plastic bowl with that automotive spray can undercoat and sound deadener? Just a thought, as I do not have a TV-5 and have not sprayed a bowl. If the exterior of the plastic bowl is very clean, good hot water washing, seems like the sound deadener would stick just fine. I solicit everyone's thoughts and experiences if you've tried this. The only concern that I can think of is if the deadener has any chemical in it that would attack the plastic on the bowl. Are there any chemical engineers in the crowd?

Tutorial gives you an idea of sound, although this lady is using metal shot for jewellery cleaning.

I made a cylinder out of acoustic foam with some square pieces on top so there's ventilation space. Now I can easily hold a conversation, the noise is down to a hum.

afterburnt - Could you expound a bit on your solution to the noise? What kind of foam, where to obtain it, and how did you attach it. Is it on the outside of the bowl, and the lid? I would like to hear how you completed the whole project. Any particulars or specifications for the foam material or the material used to attach it. Brand names would be helpful.
Thanks,
Jim

Thanks, Jim A pic would be worth 1000 words anyway but I can't post pics. Some call it "egg crate" foam you can get rolls and squares of it on Amazon. It's not very stiff so I made a frame of sorts out of an anti fatigue mat for the bottom and secure it with a bungee cord. In the top of the cylinder i put a couple of the squares backed with cardboard. The whole thing just sets over the tumbler. I would imagine memory foam would be more effective, it's a bit denser just in case you have an old mattress topper laying around.

The biggest factor in reducing the noise of my TV5 is tightening down the rubber covered nuts Also, make sure the edges of the bowl and lid are CLEAN. Much of the noise is generated by vibration of the bowl against the lid. if its really quiet, check to see that the rocks aren't too dry. The machine generates friction and heat in the load which increases evaporation of water as the ground off rock thickens the slurry and you can get a lock up if it gets too dry. Check the tumbler at leas6t twice daily to make sure it is staying moist. Add a teaspoon or so of water if he slurry isn't fairly fluid and shiny. Never run it dry or use the tumbler for initial grinding- you'll ruin the bowl. Otherwise, my bowls hold up very well. Another thing that speeds processing is using a wetting agent like dish detergent, soap shavings, or Borax. Some people use borax with detergent and I don't really understand why. But you can't argue with results. I run my several tumblers in the garage and don't notice the noise. Your TV5 should serve you well for a long time.
One thing more- there's a YouTube video that I think is from Raytech demonstrating the machine They run it half full and don't mention media (ceramic media, tiny tumbled stones, or even tiny garnets as I have done successfully. The pointy is that the vibratory tumblers should be run nearly full. Not too much water, either. CHeck out (here I go again) Rob from Michigan Rocks who has several videos about tumblinhg that are really informative. You can use about the same formulas for your TV5 he uses in his lot_O. The latter, though very expensive, has proven very durable though I have seen recent reviews that concern me about it coming from the factory needing adjustment of the fan mounted weights , premature motor failure and poorly fitted barrel mounting components that do not hold the barrel securely. The companty has changed hands, but hopefully the problems will soon be worked out. Most of the lapidary equipment manufacturers are small businesses that depend on other companies to supply barrels, motors, etc. so quality control is complicated.

I have the TV-10 and its running behind me in my office in the basement. Yep it's loud! I absolutely intend of making a cover out of acoustic foam. I can't hear it at night with the door shut to the basement and the AC on so....

I know this thread is old, but I want to clarify one of the comments. The TV-10 cannot use ceramic (per the instruction manual) but it is permitted in the TV-5. And yes...the TV-5 is loud!
