Hey everyone,
Glad I found this forum. I’m just starting out with rockhounding and there is so much to learn!
I started hounding as a way to enjoy the outdoors with my kids. It’s turning out to be totally addictive. My family just glazes over when I start talking about hounding locations, recent finds, and tumbling polishing stuff. lol They do get excited though when I come home with cool finds. I just haven’t convinced them yet that the best part is the hunt!
I’ve pulled in some of my friends to go on adventures and we’re still trying to figure out what we’re doing. We seem to categorize everything as Jasper until we get home and figure out we have a lot more than that. Luckily we all like diving deep into interesting adventures and finding hidden treasures that the world just passes by.
I’m always searching the web for answers and that’s what lead me here. This seems like a great group to help in the process. I hope someday to know enough to help others too. For right now I’m just the student though

Welcome to the forum from South Dakota! After a few years, I definitely still feel like a student when it comes to rock identification...ummm...a student who keeps getting held back to repeat kindergarten over and over! LOL

I guess that the St. Louis metro-east counts as southern Illinois too so; Hi neighbor!

Welcome gravel girl. Your message prompted me to go to my bookshelf for a book I discovered on my last visit to Ill (where I still have family roots). Its entitled Geology underfoot in Illinois. By Raymond Wiggers. It has innumerable chapters on various geographic features and regions, discusses the history of glaciation, and would be a great resource for probing moraines and old river beds that would be primary foci for glacial diversity in rocks. Maybe you know it but if not it would be worth a search on Thriftbooks or Adlibris. There are wonderful things in the midwest, but the problem is often that they are covered with DIRT.

Hello and welcome. Beautiful area of the country you live in. I've only been down there one time to see the eclipse a few years ago. Garden of the Gods was something else!

gravelgirlHi from northern Illinois! Where abouts are you from down there? You might not be too far from some good fluorite! Beautiful material. I have 5 kiddos that somewhat enjoy rocks too. Some more then others, but we all have fun with it.

Some more then others, but we all have fun with it. We are not far from the fluorite region at all. It’s not happy hunting though. There have been to many thefts at the old mines and the sheriffs office patrols them now. There are no legal hunting areas. I like heading into the surrounding states better. There are so many great areas within an hour or two from here.

gravelgirlThat’s a bummer, I’m not surprised though that’s what I have heard about the area and fluorite. Visit Lake Michigan any? It’s a treasure trove there.
