Custom wraps/necklaces are almost done. These were made with the rocks I posted a while ago for ID. After lots of tests and research, I am 99% sure they are meteorites. They were found in the Jordan River at the place attributed to the baptism of Jesus. Many meteorites have been found in the area and the place is well documented. Anyways, my friends had very specific requirements. No polishing or shaping the rocks in any way. The wire must hold the rocks secure, but not take away from them. The two wraps must match each other in color and style. The necklace had to be black woven leather. One was to be 17 7/8” long and the other 17 3/8” long. I tried a couple of designs before settling on this. Had to go from 18 gu to 20 gu as the 18 blocked the stones too much. Note that I used a wooden toothpick to tighten the wires to the stone after taking these photos. I spent about 4 total hours making these. I made the necklaces from purchased leather cord and antique bronze jewelry findings. The wrap wire is antique bronze. Both pendants were made to not really have a front and back. One was a 4 sided rock and the other 3 sided. So, what would you charge? I let them know that due to their requirements, it would take several hours to do. They were not worried about the cost. They were initially sitting to another regular customer at work. I had just made a custom bracelet for her. I told her $20.00 and she gave me $25.00. I sent them a couple photos of one pendant and the end of one necklace. They loved it. My total expense for materials is about $12.00. Most of that was for the leather cord. Would appreciate pricing advice. I am thinking $40.00. My knee injury caused me to be unable to work on these for about a month. Thanks.

Don't sell yourself or your time short. What's the minimum you would expect as an hourly rate? Now double that at least. Since no price was specified they have the option of negociating your price down or up, but . . . start with what you would really like to charge and slide from their to keep everyone feel that they were treated fairly. Never apologize or underestimate your art!!!

If they are indeed meteorites from the Jordan River, then you should be able to ask more. I think they are nice. Simple is good. It sounds like you met all of their strict requirements, so they should be happy. If you are happy with 40 then ask 60 and give yourself some wiggle room. If they are meteorites then 60 is a bargain.

You are underselling yourself, Beth. I'm assuming you're talking $40 for both necklaces. First, you did them at least twice before you were satisfied that the design would fulfill their requirements. You had to buy the cord, which I'm assuming you drove to the store to get (time, cord and gas $). You spent $ on the wire at some point. Your total time was 4 hrs. If you only charge them $40, $40-12 (for supplies) = $28. $28/2 = $14 each. So does $14 each cover your gas, electricity and time? Don't forget these are custom made to their specifications. You are making $7/hr. if you charge them that amount. Well below minimum wage nowadays.

A positive identification as meteorites would increase the value.
A positive identification as from the river Jordan would as well.
Add perceived value, minus friend discount, and you have a reasonable price to charge. Good luck!

Her clients provided the stones (or meteorites), so I didn't include them in my post.

Thanks everyone. Yes, I was given the stones to wrap for them. I have a few days to determine final price.

After thinking about the 2 wraps without the stones... I think you should ask for 50 a piece. 60, if they are the haggling type.

Pricing is so difficult. Just remember: Set yourself an hourly wage- first. No matter what you do, your labor will always be worth more. As you are a relatively new wrapper and these are simple wraps, you should be able to make about 15.00 an hour at 50.00 a piece. If you spent more time, it would be a little less, but still not bad.

They loved the necklaces. I told them 50 and they gave me 60! Also bought me a beer. They will be letting others know who made the necklaces, too. It was a great day.
