Basalt columns near Othello, WA. This place was hot, windy and desolate. It was awesome ChadThose formations are commonly referred to as Columnar Basalt. There are lots of distinct instances of them all throughout the Pacific Northwest. I found them most impressive when I first got out here and I still do. If you were traveling back via the NE corner of Wyoming, you could check out Devils Tower and see them on a gigantus scale. markb

I never made it to Seattle still on my butte list Mt Rainer ? wild guess....mostly Right you are Ed, quite the sight up close and when looming on the horizon markb I did make a slight detour to check out Devils Tower and while I didn't get close enough to touch it, it's pretty amazing out there on its own.

Found this guy with his head buried in the the totes at the Rockshed. Kept murmuring something about being Jason and from South Dakota 🤔 Anyway, he was licking rocks so he seemed normal enough to take a quick picture with. Couple more days I'll be home and post a few more highlights.

LOL I can't express enough what a pleasure it was meeting up with you and hanging out with you yesterday! After you left the house last night, I told my wife I did fault you for the amount of money I spent at The Rock Shed yesterday! LOL - Have a super safe rest of your trip today and (potentially) tomorrow!!

The stretch from Yellowstone to Cody, WY
Artist Point, Yellowstone. This was a truly remarkable view, up there with Yosemite or the Grand Canyon. Not many other vantage points is the only downside.
Firehole Canyon, Yellowstone. One of my favorite accidental side quests, there was a swimming hole at the end
Some of the many, many examples of geothermal activity at Yellowstone, no two were alike.
5300 miles over 11 days of off and on driving, roughly $550 in gas. Lucky my rental got near 40mpg the entire trip.
Learned a lot from the layout of the land, almost every place was different than I had expected or imagined.
I think the most beautiful stretch of highway was from Eastern Yellowstone to Sheridan, WY., just beautiful landscape and canyon views throughout.
Thank you again to jasoninsd for being a gracious host and guide, it was cool to meet up and talk rocks and life.

Chad...again...the pleasure really was mine! I wish I could have done more for you other than just provide conversation. If/when there's a next time, I'll make sure you're not having to do the camping thing while you're here. Love the pictures of Yellowstone!!

I think you'd appreciate that early drive out of Yellowstone, old forest fires, morning rain, and open roads.

mohs That was just a roadside stop somewhere before coming out of the high roads. Bout a 100 foot drop, close as I wanted to get in slimy sandals ha. I got home with a couple days to spare, a Sea Quench Ale at 4AM to welcome me home then back to normal life after a night of sleep. It seems quiet being back here, away from all that openness.

ashley Here is most of the "loot" Jason let me handpick from his finds, I got more than my share of prarie agate and banded chert. Mostly Bahia Agates and some Botswana's and some others that I really liked. I hope to do a progress thread on some of these, it's a new material for me anyway.

It is a phenomon After being away on grand adventure Returning to a routine How it adds distinct perspective. Must be a name for it. Dynamic quality perhaps....
