Patty, liveoak , asked about rounds. I went through many 1000s of pictures and found out that I like prongs on rounds. I was surprised by that. Most of them had prongs. Here's a sample... Groove wrapped rutilated quartz
prongs on willow creek tiny rhodochrosite with prongs netted raspberry aventurine border wrapped marcasite in agate

That Willow Creek cab looks like a time-lapse picture of the night sky...only colored! Gorgeous! I think what's extremely notable about each of the border wraps is the perfect circle you've created. There is no deviation to the outline where the binding wires are located. I've noticed on some of my wraps, I create a "dip" in the perimeter at the binding wire locations. As always, stellar artistry in your pieces...and such variety! I do love the intricacy of all that's going on in that Marcasite piece. Gorgeous my friend!

And a fine batch of rounds they is !
The prongs are nice, but I do agree with jasoninsd that marcasite has a lot going on, and worth a study in itself. Thank you for showing me some examples , I have a couple of round cabs I made that I've been stewing on.
Always enjoy seeing your work, wonderful inspiration.

Beautiful pieces, Tela! While I like the Marcasite, that little Rhodo and the Willow Creek drew me in immediately.

Post me a picture in this thread of an obvious example of what you are talking about and I'll try to help.
Thank you, liveoak! The marcasite was a custom job. I have never been terribly happy with it. I think it's the copper. To me, it just doesn't work with it.
hummingbirdstones Thank you. I like the willow creek best. I was so happy when I finished that cab! I just love it.

All are fantastic of course, but I love the groove wrapped rutilated quartz! I haven't done any groove wraps for a while, kind of makes me want to... Oh, and great work on the prongs- I tried using prongs a couple of times but gave up. Like anything else I suppose it takes practice.

Prongs can be difficult starting out, but they do get easier- especially if you practice on a piece of wire for awhile.

Love the design of the marcasite. Thanks! I wish it was Nipomo marcasite, but I still like it- obviously better in person.

jasoninsd This is a rare time that I wish images carried over in reply...
Considering this one
On the bottom left edge there is a gap. If you follow with your eye, from right to left, the curved line that the bindings make, you can see that you need to bend that area with the end of the bindings. Did that make sense? You can see that it doesn't curve at the end. Also, there may be a problem with how you turned your wires on the back. Often, really stiff wires - usually a heavily bound bundle- will turn out rather than bend when you turn your back cradle wires in. All of the wire at the bottom is pretty well work hardened. You've got bindings, a full bundle and loops. So, that area is really stiff. It's too hard to conform to the stone when a small force (bending the back cradle wire) acts upon it. The cradle wire can kick that section out a little bit (or a lot!).
That small gap at the top left can be fixed by bending a plier full of bundle- just before the bindings- and then bend down towards the bundle. That will flatten the wires, but the top will kick up. Then you can tweak the wires coming up, which should be pretty easy. I'm trying to explain this by memory, so I hope I'm getting it right.
The whole point to wire wrapping is conforming the wire to the stone not simply wrapping a wire around it.
Concerning this
I'm really not even sure this has a problem. I don't see it.

Thanks so much for sharing the rounds, and the variety of ways to deal with them. I always draw a blank and this is certainly "food for thought." I can't pick a favorite, each is perfect for the style you chose.

Thanks Tela! What you're saying totally makes sense! Both of these are gone now...but it's definitely instruction for improvement on future pieces.

rockjunquie I like all of them but I'm just really drawn to the construction of the mariscite. I just sat staring at it for probably 15 minutes trying to work out what how that was done. It's a beautiful design.
