And this winner is......... John at Js Gems with a guess of 85grams and the actual weight is 68grams. Heres a picture with a credit card sized card next to it. Johnjsgems - if you would PM me your mail address I will send you the item right away. Thanks everyone for trying - it was hard keeping quiet seeing all the waaaayyyy high guesses - but thats how it goes. I'll pick up another blue john item soon and have another comp. Mark

Jack - i looked them up on the net but they dont show stock yet - they are working on it.
I'd like to know lb for lb what its worth - but then again its all about quality as this stuff like so many other types of veined rock varies wildly in density and such.
Hey I have a few good chunks - but my mate has the biggest lump and he was just "there" with me when he found it. Bummer. I bet he doesnt know where it even is now.
If you go into Burhouses - check out the Blue John for me and let me know what the score is.
Looking round the shops in Castleton i think they are getting a bit short on the stuff to be honest.
Cheers Mark.

Kd, it was a dull day so I didnt get many shots - heres 5 of the area I did get on sunday. Luke in the pub - i was teasing him with one pea for his dinner A shot of winnats pass through the car window on the way into the village. A view (hazy) of Mam Tor - the hill everyone likes to climb on days out. You can see them at the top. Entrance to the blue john mine, a hugely popular tourist attraction. Looking left at the blue john mine, a view of the start of the edale valley. Pics are hazy - im going to go again the next nice day (its about 25mins in the car) and do some better shots as its jigged a few memories from rockmadman, erbojones and johnjsgems - which thanks for the comments - I was collecting probably in the same spots!!! (And I kept some ). I'll put a gallery up on the pics board - theres loads to see there. Cheers Mark

I went to Castleton yesterday - its a place with a claim to being the only place on earth you can find this Blue John stone. So I got a paperweight for a competition - see who can guess the weight (in grams) of it from the picture - Im hoping it will be hard to tell its size from the picture, making it a bit trickier. The weight you guess is inclusive of the entire thing - not just the stone (as I cant weigh the stone !! ) One guess per person at the end - but you can change your guess if you want to. Heres the place its from (just for interest) - And heres the item - So - guess the weight and post here in grams and the nearest to the correct weight by Sunday morning 14th Oct will win it. Good luck Mark

Ladies and Gentlemen - thanks to Susan we now have a Wicked comp board. Susan wrote and asked for a place for the comps - its a good move because they tend to drift about a bit etc. Just as a thought - it may be good to post all comps in here - and all votes in here aswell - but if you instigate a voting type competition - then its best if you also promote it in the main board by saying youve raised a new comp and tell peeps that they should visit the competition board to see it. This way old comps float out and new ones come in at the top etc. Is this OK everyone? I thought it cool and thought its good organising aswell. Cheers All and if you want it to stay as was then give me a shout. Mark

All - this new board is here to zero in on Wire Wrapping. As is the case with the Cabs - I dont do this yet - but thought this may be useful when ppl want to indulge and display their specific cab creations and talk about it when working/learning etc.

Alice - I know - I tried to get them all straight by amending them and it restores what the original post was.
I wanted to write a crawler/bot which could easily identify "finished" from "rough" (in string terms) - but I cant if they are all different.

Okey Dokey - by request. I would think this particular board would need to be - well - more formally structured than the other boards to be of use. With this in mind - for those wishing to post could we implement these formats. Subject - "RockType - Finished" or Subject - "RockType - Rough" Im just doing a couple to kick things off. I think its a good idea - and would be better if the threads could be sorted by name - however this isnt possible, the search function will be useful though I think. We can see how it goes.

Just got back from my wifes Aunts in Macclesfield - they always throw a buffet on boxing day. They are going to live in Spain though this coming year so thats the end of the get togethers. A long tradition is over for me (at least 12 years) - although maybe I think I'll throw the boxing day party from now on. Well someones gotta doit yeah?
