Dave, the dead center would be hardened steel & would come to a point. The business end is an aluminum dop stick, the same as are used with faceting machines.

I'll tell you what. With the motor & arbor mounted, that thing is heavy.
It wouldn't be hard to bend up a housing like that. Really only 2 pieces of metal. The pan & back are one piece, and the sides, top & front top lip is the other. The pan / back is welded solid to the sides & top. All 16 gage steel.

Made a very nice equipment score. Everything arrived yesterday, and I'm still unpacking. How often do you see a 40 year old unrestored machine that's this clean ? Just need to steam clean the inside of the pan & hood. And then there's the Crown bead mill. Missing the motor & drive wheel, but otherwise complete. And a Rock Rascal Model T. Needs a motor & good cleaning, but the bearings are smooth & the blade has lots of life left. Even came with the vise & a spare blade. More pics coming as I get things unpacked & sorted out.

Just finished scanning over both books. It's my opinion that both books are worth having. While the first book covers all of the Owyhee's, Some other Oregon locations and a portion of western Idaho, The second book concentrates on the southern half of the Owyhee's and South Eastern Idaho. These are the areas where the best known and most important deposits of picture jaspers are found.
So if you can find a copy of the first book without breaking the bank, my advice would be to buy it. You won't be sorry you did.

Fedex carrier Bob. Young football player looking guy.
It was the wife that told me the Fedex guy was on the porch. She didn't look too happy until I started unpacking things, and started telling her the approximate value of each thing. So far I still have all of my skin, and no frying pan knots on my head.

Mine arrived today in great shape. A small tear in the envelope, but no damage to the book. I was happy to see that both authors signed it.
Been unpacking equipment today and my hands were dirty. I'll do a quick comparison of the 1st & 2nd books tomorrow.

WOO HOO !! The stuff arrived today. Money well spent. I've unwrapped at least $2,000.00 worth of stuff, and I'm still unpacking things. The Crown bead mill is complete except for a motor, and I have a bunch of spares. The little Rock Rascal looks almost new. Just needs a good scrubbing & a motor. Got a total of 8 - 8" end laps that look like new. Each in its own bag & marked for the diamond paste that was used on it. A zip lock bag full of brand new diamond drills. Each still in its little plastic tube. Another larger zip lock bag full of syringes full of diamond paste all the way up to 50,000 grit. And bunches of other stuff.
All that & the wife hasn't killed me, (Yet).

Dang Mel, that second one is killer. Anyone who doesn't like that golden moss can send it to me.
Just about got my new vintage 10" saw ready to role. I'll finally be able to slice up some of the Rios I got from the pebble pups a few months ago.

If you say so Bob. Until I get my 8" Poly arbors set up, 6" Genie is all I have to work with. Been doing just fine since the early 90's with it. But I cut my cabbing teeth on 8" Poly arbors with the old bump wheels & SC way back in the early 50's.

LOL. Bob, I have a brand new Loretone arbor with diamond grinding wheels on it, and the under wheel spray. Bought it a few years back to use for grinding sphere preforms.
Saw a 2 wheel Loretone arbor on ebay the other day with 2 half rotted expando's on it. The guy was asking almost $400,00 for it. The pan & hood looked like they were about rusted out from not being maintained. Some sellers seem to think their junk is made of gold. But there are good deals out there if you watch the listings every day.
