Mark the flat with a pencil or marker and when the mark is gone. x2 on this one. I use a black or blue Sharpie and make cross hatch markings across the entire surface so that I end up with a grid of 1/2 inch squares across the face of the rock. When then the marks are all gone, I'll move the item to the next stage. If you're polishing slabs, I use rubber cement and anchor some 1 pound fishing weights to them to help provide some additional friction via the weight. Paul

I can see you now with the box on the hood of your vehicle trying frantically to get into it when a passerby walks by, smiles and says "Oh, that must be something you're really excited about receiving!" You reply, "Yes, it's a box of rocks!!!". The passerby goes on by glancing back over his shoulder at you with a worried look on his face.... The general public just doesn't understand us.... I got a similar line from the post office employee when I was shipping some rocks out: "They don't have rocks in Arizona?"

I wanted to post a "THANK YOU" to John ( johnjsgems) over at JSGems (http://www.jsgemslapidary.com/). Since I inherited a Covington combo unit some years back and an older 14 inch saw from Deedolce ( deedolce) back in 2012, he's been my "go to guy" for my lapidary supplies. After quite of bit of back and forth via email scoping what I needed, I purchased a new 10" blade and some flat lap supplies from him and the shipment arrived in 24 hours. I really appreciate the help and service, John! Absolutely Awesome! Paul

I borrow my wife's vases as well as in Ikea cases. Nice looking display. I've seen those cabinets on IKEA's site but I couldn't tell if they are have big gaps between the panels. My fear is dust intrusion. How are they working for you? Quite well. There is a gap between the panels but the dust is less than leaving them out in the open. The larger problem is simply not enough lighting. I added lights to one of them and will do the same to the other later.

Welcome to the forum, by the way. That's a great specimen. I'm often up in the Mojave/high desert area rockhounding. Maybe we'll run into each other!

Have a good time at the event. Hopefully, you'll have some time to get some rockhounding in as well. Looking forward to seeing pics of your finds.

Awesome specimens! Thanks for posting! Let us know how you managed to travel back 200 years and come back in one piece... You guys are cute. Just feeling old. "Oh, I went to the mine in the mid-1990s to collect wulfenite." Half the people I know weren't even born yet or were not yet 10. If y'all are interested I can go through my crates and photograph some more of this stuff. These aren't even the best specimens, just the ones I had pictures of. That must've been awesome to pick through all that before it had been "picked over".

There was a guy on RTH that tumbled a whopper chunk of stone canyon jasper with garnets and grit. I believe in a small barrel. It does give me some good flexibility. In retrospect, I think I should have gotten the smaller of the Thulmer's Vib tumblers (I picked up the 18).

Thanks, Carlos. You've always got some of the best looking Rio Grande tumbles.

I use a glob of putty to hold weights on slabs. Don't recall which brand I went with, but it is blue. Applied to a dry slab, I have never had it fall off and it's always been easy to remove. I tried a grayish/white putty at first and found that it started collecting grit so I gave up. It may not have been strong enough as the vib lap would eventually shake the weights loose. Good idea, though, I'll have to go back and look for another variety. Chances are, the white one I was using was more geared towards crafts, not lapidary work.
