Hi Flipper! That might work. The RPM will be real high on a tile saw, but for shaping for tumbling, should be fine! I'm updating soon with some more detail now so hope it's helpful.

The baskinite I've seen at shows around here is mostly brown. It does have some white stringers and some other colors mixed in, but the overall color reads "brown" to me. Sounds like probably the same stuff, from a different part of the deposit. Things ya learn! Thanks for sharing them.

It does kind of look like baskinite. Although the colors in yours are nicer.

Those are pretty gorgeous. You dig that yourself? It looks a little different (better!) than the material that "that one guy" and "that other guy" are selling.

Coxxxy, take a look at Tommy's thread about building his own cabbing machine. He built hoods out of plastic water jugs, look to have been pretty easy and effective. Also, rock shows are good sources of pieces like that. I also appreciate you asking the question because I need water spreaders on my new unit too - thanks Peruano Tom for the idea about the drip irrigation T - gonna try that.

You guys gave me a huge scare. Ron has stuff posted on ebay: www.ebay.com/str/Rons-RocksHe only sells on ebay as far as I know. I sent him a message though so we'll find out for sure. Edited to add: Ron replied to my ebay message within 10 minutes. He has definitely not died. He did say he had been on vacation for 2 weeks though...

Hey johnw . . . probably doesn't apply to your popcorn ball sand, but I learned from a biologist that a lot of the white sand on some tropical beaches is made when certain fish (parrotfish, for one) chomp up the coral, digest the coral critters themselves and poop out the calcium carbonate houses the coral has built. If you've ever snorkled with them, there is a frequent stream of white sandy plume from the hind ends of parrot fish, so I think it's true. They definitely do eat coral, and a lot of it has to go out the other end. But I would think that would produce sharp angular pieces - they don't have molars for chewing, just "beak" type mouths for biting it off.

Cool. I love that feeling where you have a pile of little slabs on a plate! You're doing better with chrysocolla than I ever can - I've sort of stopped cutting it becuase so much of it doesn't hold together for me. My stash is sad and ignored.

Cool, good info Tommy. I'm going to shop for continuous rim or segmented rim blades. (Segmented would be ok, right?)
