Rob Jugglerguy, I've got a couple of books on Jeeping and rockhounding in Colorado, if I can find them. Been awhile since I've been over there messing around and don't see it happening soon. PM me your address and I'll send them to you. Had a 1982 CJ-7 I bought new in the fall of 1981. Finally sold it in 2006, really wish I still had it. I'll rummage through my few remaining brain cells and see if I can recommend some routes for you. Russ

Those are all way cool. I especially like the votive holders. I think you showed me something like them when we met up in McDermitt a few years back. If you make any to sell I'd be interested. I don't have the room or equipment to make anything like that right now. thanks. Yeah, I had one with me at McDermitt that time.

The foil I'm using right n0w is some old stuff-I know for sure it's at least 15 years old.
The flux is liquid, apply it with a brush. Again, made for stained glass work.
My soldering iron is 100 watts with a separate heat control. Still playing with it to get the effect I want.
Thanks all for your kind comments. With any luck I'll get these to look like a sixth grader did the work rather than a six year old.

Thanks everybody. Ali, they already covered it pretty well. Cleaning is the big thing, even the oil from your fingers can be enough to keep the solder from working. Using the proper flux, as well, I've seen people try to use the flux from the plumbing department at th hardware store and have issues. It does take a pretty decent soldering iron as well. For cleaning up afterwards I use a little Dawn in some water and a cheap toothbrush. I'm still trying to figure it out, may get it one of these days.

Finally got going in my new Stupid Room. Made some of these a few years ago, don't believe I ever posted pictures, gave them all away. Trying to get the feel back. Lost/misplaced my old patterns, these are a little off so I'll need to do some adjusting. Also made a couple of these. Made some a few years ago, some of you were unlucky enough to see them. Have a couple more in progress. The bases still need to be finished, that will be tomorrow's project.
Thanks for looking. Have a great day.

Thanks everybody. Those were the chap little fire agates-think she paid 2 or 3 dollars for a baggie of them. Didn't intend to tumble them, but just may give that another try sometime.

Oh, I always enjoy seeing new stuff even if I don't comment. Should be able be on more now, though. Now that we'r in Nevada I someties wish we were a little farther south in Nevada. Of course, then I'd hate summers.

Mostly just stuff And the oops. After our move I found a baggie with agate I didn't immediately recognize. Said what the heck and threw a few of them in the tumbler. They ran in coarse for a week and during cleanout it became obvious what they were. At the
Denver show a few years ago Cyndi had bought a a little pile of those small cheap fire agates. May actually try these again just for kicks.
Well, thanks for looking. Have a great day.

Part of it is just keep looking. We got our old HP 18" with a good blade for $600. Of course we had to disassemble the whole thing and carry it up a flight of stairs to get it out of a basement. Thought we might have to cut the legs off and weld them back on but it barely squeezed through the door. House had been remodeled since the saw was placed in the basement. Just got lucky on that one. Only one I had seen that cheap within 500 miles and I'd been looking for quite a while. Depends I think on where you are as well, that was in northern Wyoming, Cody area.

well, I chime in here finally. We're planning to be there, staying at the Motel 6 in Blythe. One of these years we'll get down there with the camper but this year would just be too much going on. If it works out I may run down for a day or two right after the first of the year as well. Sure sorry to hear about jeannie having knee trouble. Good luck with the surgery if it becomes necessary. My doctor was giving me some grief and I told him we worked hard, played hard, wore out our bodies and now they're giving up on us. Looking forward to getting out of the snow and seeing you all down there next month. Russ

Well, here are a few pictures of my crappy little setup.
Threw this together one afternoon about 5 or 6 years ago out of junk had laying around. Already had the jack, only thing I bought for this were the springs, Ace Hardware to the rescue. I just use heavy cardboard around it. Somewhat surprisingly stuff doesn't go flying that much, actually less flying pieces than I get from beating on rocks with a sledge hammer. I do wear the goggles just because. Looks like crap but it works. Zero attention was given to making it pretty.
Just happened to have a bucket of rocks sitting there so I threw one on.
Chunk of jasper from up the road a piece.
So, yeah, your Horrid Freight press will work fine.
NRG mentioned log splitter - seems like several years ago someone posted about using a log splitter. If I were going to be busting a lot of rocks for tumbling I'd look at building a jaw crusher or something similar.
Just some of my thoughts-worth exactly what you paid for them.

Yup. Built a small press using a 12 ton jack. Works ok. Depends on what you're using it for. For breaking up tumbler material it works nice sinc it doesn't spread fractures like a sledgehammer does, so it works nice on the better rocks. Biggest downfall is it is slow. I'll try to get a picture this week.
