Managed to run the saw a little late summer early fall-figured as long as I was in the garage sorting stuff/trying to get stuff put away the saw could be running. Threw rocks in the vise and hacked up a few. Grabbed a few slabs this morning and took a few pictures. A rock I found across the road from the house here.
Slab of rhyolite from about an hour west of here.
Chunk of rhyolite faced off to see what is in there
Gary Green
Crazy Lace
Green Moss
All for now. Thanks for looking.

Thanks all. Back in '85-'86 I was living about two blocks from the state park.

Sounds like a fun trip. Fair amount of driving for a week but not that bad. Watch the weather and adjust plans accordingly. Lots of empty country out there, lots of places with no cell phone coverage. Back at the end of June I had reason to run over to southern Colorado. From Ely, NV on US 50 through Delta to I-15 at Holden was 186 miles. I passed one car and three passed me. Relaxing drive. Lots to see over there, enjoy.

Well, that's a bummer that you folks won't be there. Having just completed our move I understand and don't envy you. I hired a couple of guys from the temp agency to help load the UHaul truck and they were griping about boxes of rocks. Kids these days. Good luck with it and we'll catch up with you another time.

I'd been meaning to do this for a while and just never got it done. On my last trip to Wyoming a couple of weeks ago I stopped and took some pictures. Granite in the Wind River canyon. Without looking it up, I think this rock is dated at about 2.7 billion years old. Not really old but that was quite a while ago. Drive about 20 more miles and we find this:
Travertine terraces at Hot Springs State Park in Thermopolis. So, in fairly close proximity we have some old basement rocks, and new rock being formed before our eyes. Not as dramatic as a volcano maybe, but I always thought it was kind of cool.

Congrats on closing the deal! I had to look up Laphroaig.. sounds like the perfect way to wash down a steak dinner Ahh, Laphroaig has become my special occasion elixir of choice. Got home from supper, poured a wee dram and sat out in the yard looking at the stars. It could be worse.

Well, it's been a wild ride but we sold the Wyoming place today. Maybe I'll finally have time to get on here and bother people again. For now, we're going down to the steakhouse for supper, then I'm going to pour two fingers of Laphroaig. Maybe more than once. No more 1400 mile round trips dealing with stuff. Got a bunch of slabs that need to be turned into something. Have a great weekend.

Thanks all. Have to admit the opalized wood is one of the few things I've tumbled that wasn't self collected. Made a trade for a box of it at the show in Cody a few years back. Interesting stuff.
Actually kind of tickled with some of the rhyolite. Now that I know for sure it works up decent I'll be going back for more of the brecciated stuff.
Thanks again.

A lot of that looks like the rhyolite and terrain of Northern Nevada. It is. We're in the Ely area.

Past couple of weekends were got out for short jaunts just checking things out. Permian hash.
Double or nothing Now this is a nice chunk of jasperoid. Couldn't get it loaded. Guess I need to get NRG and jeannie over here to show me how to do it. A few we did bring home
That should be enough to bore you to tears. Everybody have a great weekend.

Just saw this. Thanks for posting it aDave. Not much help since I'm not familiar with that area. I will pass on that I just heard this morning that the BLM is pulling the same stuff in the Lake Havasu City-Bouse area. I'll look into that more and pass on what I find. Russ

...and not really photography, either. Our house had this ratty old birdhouse mounted on the old clothesline pole. Planned on taking it down just because it looked, well, ratty. Hadn't gotten it done yet and won't for a while. Turns out a pair of mountain bluebirds have set up housekeeping in there. Keep trying to get a picture with both of them but they don't seem to want to cooperate. Turns out they are the state bird of Nevada. So, here are separate pictures of them almost a month ago when they were hauling in nesting materials. This evening we watched the male bringing food in, we assume she is setting eggs. Or watching tv and eating bon bons, who can tell? The male The female
Kind of neat. Hopefully I can post some rocks in the next few days. Thanks for looking.
