Just caught up with this one, great post, Jean. Just replaced the shafts and bushings on the QT6 a few weeks ago. Since most folks have different ideas on lube I'll throw mine in there. When I installed the new shafts I used a light coat of light grease because I had it laying around. For routine lubing I generally use 10wt motor oil.

Thanks all. Messed around a little more. Wiper installed, helps a bunch. The circuit in my Stupid Room is GFCI protected. manofglass, I like that grinder idea. Wrote it in my little notebook so it won't slip between my two remaining brain cells and gt lost. Fun is making stuff out of junk. Cheap and lazy is my way of doing things. Russ

That's a real effective looking project, nice to see good things made from misc. parts. I like seeing the screwdriver slots all lined up on your switch plate, took my wife a long time to get used to that here. Thanks, Larry. Clocking screws, bolts and stuff is just one of my little weirdnesses. I have more. Russ

Thanks, folks. Obviously the guards will need to be redone-but for now it's something to play with.

I've had this idea kind of kicking around in my head for a while now, had most of the parts laying around. Wanted to build something actually nice, but a couple of days ago I just started throwing parts together. Still mock-up stage really but I was running it this afternoon and think it may work. Heck, it made noise, sanded the rock, threw water all over, guess it's okay. I know I'll be modifying it, but use it the way it is for a while before I tear it all apart and start over. 003 by FTW2007, on Flickr Ugly thing, ain't it? 8 x 3 expando on the right, 6 inch polishing head on the left. I'll use SiC discs on it for backs of cabs and whatnot. Not pictured is the water feed-2 gallon garden sprayer that has never had anything but water in it. Used it this afternoon, seemed to work fine. Presto chango-- 011 by FTW2007, on Flickr Stole this idea from bobby1 . Domed polishing disc just over 10 inches diameter. Have a chunk of carpet remnant to put on it but that won't be for a couple of days yet. Remove the expando and it's guard, install the disc with it's guard. Only takes a couple of minutes. 010 by FTW2007, on Flickr Top view just because I took the picture so I may as well post it. The motor is an old GE from a washing machine. Has two pulleys of different sizes. You'll notice that the driven shaft also has two pulleys of different sizes. But wait! There's more! It is a two speed motor. 015 by FTW2007, on Flickr On/off on the right, on the left is a 3-way switch. Hot to common, legs to poles on motor. By varying motor speed and which pulleys I have the belt on provides an rpm range from 500 to 1725, depending on what I'm doing at the time. Already have some changes in mind but want to play with it a while. Just trying to get as many processes as possible in as little space as I can. Feel free to comment when you finish laughing. Russ

Never had problem with ranchers. Have run into some strange people. Larger concern was grizzer bears and cougars.

Finally finished a batch last week-first one in over a year. Sometimes life happens, you know? Anyhow took a few pics-not the best batch I've done and certainly not the best pictures, still getting things sorted out again. Not the whole batch, just tossed out a couple of handfuls here Serena jasper from McDermitt Next couple are Carnival agate from McDermitt The next few are some Wyoming rocks This last stuff I didn't collect myself, it was with my Father in Laws stuff. Not positive but I think it's some of that "Gemfield" material from over by Goldfield. Thanks for looking. Russ

Have to agree with Chuck above. I have a 45C and a QT-6 running right now that belonged to my FIL. I've had the running for ten years, I don't know how many years he had them. Replace the motor on the 45C a couple of years ago. If your tumblers are in an area with restricted airflow then cooling fans may help. All machinery wears out with time. Certainly won't hurt to run some fans, and if you have the stuff laying around and feel like messing with it, great. I wouldn't spend much money/time to set it up, as I doubt the cost/benefit ratio would be positive. Personal choice, not worth arguing about.

Every place has good and bad points. That said, we got out of CO in 2007-I first moved there in 1979, it's a completely different place now. Moved to Wyoming, which I loved. Now we're in Nevada and it's fine, too. Picture looking south across the road from the house this morning. Those are deer tracks at the bottom of the first photo. Good luck. Russ
