Well since I don't Have Randy's pile to cut on, I put a piece of tan oak from McDermitt on the drag saw. got to strap it down and do a bit of alignment before starting to cut it!
Amazing. A petrified forest. Where was this? Good thinking on part of the mechanic. I wonder how much he was able to take?
It is most unusual. Looking forward to seeing some polished pieces.
The area is on the south side of the Carquinez Strait in San Francisco Bay, basically the west side of the Sacramento River delta. I’m guessing they were laying down when buried and geologic uplift is responsible for them appearing to be standing vertical.
A lot of petrified trees were buried stand vertical!
I spent 30 minutes trying to get shot of this one without the reflections! I failed!! Stinking Water Oak, miocene. One heck of a lot of Forest Fire smoke here again today! From the big fires in Southern Oregon and Northern Ca.
So far the best thing I've found for my needs is shallow shelving that doesn't protrude into the room too far. I just got this one and plan to build more so I can phase out the deep ones I've had for years. Here it is as I'm starting to place part of my collection in it.
I like the plastic stands, would work good for thundereggs!
I just uploaded this photo to test the system. seems to work. I had a lot of problems in getting the presets just right, I kept missing some little thing or the other. Hope I don't have to go back and relearn how to do it! Wish you luck!
My cousin has had a couple of rather large pieces of Petrified wood in her flower garden for 30 or 40 years and she wanted to see what it looked like so she bought up the smaller piece, actually her husband and his brother, and we put it on the dold drag saw and made a few cuts. This is esthe heel cut! 24 inches wide and about 9 1/2 tall. No idea of what kind of wood it was or where it came from originally. Her husband was working on a construction site and they wer landscape rocks that wee no longer wanted.
