Whatever method you use, don't get in hurry! freezer, leave it at least over night. time is your friend with any method, let the heat or cold or acetone do it job. DON"T rush it.
Can someone ID the two slabs with question marks please?
I have no idea what the one is, but the other you have stinking water looks correct. woodman would know for sure
Thats a really sweet piece of rosebud jasper in the 2nd prize package.
The color is correct for Stinking Water, It is not Oak, could be elm or hickory or any number of hardwoods that grew there. All that said about the certain thing is that it is Petrified Wood.
I got three of these degreased waiting to be worked on, guess I better get to work. Been riding tractor last few hours doing some mowing, got that done and lap is running just had lunch, now either take a nap or go work in shop!
Lucky I had a beer last night. I just tried it, a small drill bit that comes with some of the Dremel extras kits works great, nice and neat, about half speed is about right. Even better is the little conical burr, that cuts a very nice neat hole and doesn't wander around when starting the hole, about half speed is right for that too. Diamond bits are useless.
Clamp the cap in your jewellery vice, that gives you both hands to keep the Dremel nice and steady. I drilled from the outside.
Have a four X for me!!! Drank more than a few of those during the 10 years I was in and out of Cairns, QLD.
I would just use a hammer and a nail and file off the back side, real quick to punch the hole and a lot safer. you could punch from the top and leave the protusions on the inside of cap. don't know what you are doing it them.
I doubt if the play is going to cause you any problems. I have 24 inch HP of the same vintage. I like the fact that the bearings are on the outside of the saw. If the play gets too bad, you could have the holes machine out and bushings installed. You are not going to find an new parts. I will have to check mine and see how much play it has, but as long as my slabs are turning out ok I really am not concerned to much. I got tired of the brace for the lid a few weeks ago so I made one that locks in place when I open the lid. much easier.
I went out and tried to measure mine and the best I could get was about 0.007" at the position you show 0.023" Hard to measure with what I was using tho!

Stunning! What method did you use to polish such a large slab?
Flat lapped it on my lapping machine, then used the 4 inch diamond pads most of the way and finial polish using cerium oxide polish on a 6 inch pad using HF hand polisher. Not fast but it gets the job done.

Warzy Raptor: Just try being nice to -everyone-, you’ll be surprised at the results! My nasty supervisor will change her tone within five minutes when I kill her with kindness. And the local homeless lady Michelle and I have hour-long knee-slapping convos!
