I have a block of that in my shop I got from Ron's Rockshop at Camarillo. He identified it as puddingstone from Australia. Don't know anything else about it as I've been unable to Google any further info that would confirm this origin...Mel

I've used vinegar and weak muriatic pool acid in the past. Just soak it and scrub it now as I don't care if it's not totally clean. Most the George West stuff is loose caliche mud that has covered the wood and scrubs right off....Mel

Question for the fossil guys here. Most this wood is fairly recent I think, something like 10-15 million years old or so. Anyone have any idea on the bone? I'm thinking maybe a worn caudal vertebrae from a crocodile relative as that area was tropical and maybe swampy back then. Would appreciate any input. Thanks.....Mel

I'm gonna keep the bone intact as it's the first fossil bone I've found here in Texas. Don't think it has color anyway as it looks to be just gray chalcedony. Wife found a nice fern bud too but again not colorful so she will put it in a plant pot....Mel

toivO. Yep, we noticed one of our favorite roads is now gated off. Never saw a county road gated off down there before. Sad to see with the past experience of hunting down there before it was essentially ruined by development. Many of those roads looked like museums of wood seven or eight years ago. Virtually paved with wood in all colors and the ditched were full of good wood chunks...Mel

Howdy folks, Needed a break this week so yesterday the wife unit and I drove down to George west to hnut petrified wood. Four hours each way but super light traffic, since he oil fields pretty much closed down and the countryside was green and full of wildflowers and blooming shrubs of all sorts. Unfortunately, the wood hunt part of the trip was not spectacular like it used to be. Live Oak county is continuing with their destruction of all our wood hunting roads by covering them with a thick layer of caliche. This effective buried most all the wood in the bar ditches with a thick layer of white crap. Only gravel exposed is a little in places that have eroded due to rainfall. IN past trips we might of hit one e section where we filled a five gallon bucket in half an hour. This trip we covered at least a dozen or more roads and only found maybe 40 pounds of good wood in seven hours of hiking the roadsides. Most that probably came from a mile or so of eroded sections on various roads. In addition, if one can tell from all the chipping, these roads have been hit hard by collectors recently too. About 1/3 collected by us was tumble stuff, 1/3 cabbing stuff and 1/3 weird hunks for the wife's gardens. Here are just a couple of pics to show what our wood collecting paradise has become and the caliche trucks even added the insult of working on one of my favorite roads right while we were there. These road used to be surfaced with wood bearing gravel and the ditches would be full of wood. I would recommend any future visitors try to time their hunts for right after a major storm, That way, maybe some of the road cover would be washed away and the ditches cleaned out to reveal new wood. I'll post some pics of some of the better wood we got later.....Mel

Like the old joke goes:
Cop pulls over a little old Texas lady and asks for her license. She hands over her drivers license and concealed carry license. Cop says, " Ma'am, are you carrying a firearm?"
Little old lady replies, " Why yes young man I am. I have a 38 in my purse A 1911 in my glove box, and a little 25 auto on my ankle."
Cop says, "Holy smokes ma'am. What are you afraid of?"
Little old lady winks and says, " Not a damn thing young man. Not a damn thing!"
There's paranoia and there's being smart and careful *L*.....Mel

Old saying from a life long NRA member, " An anti gunner is simply a pro gunner who has never been mugged." Not being able to protect yourself from the slew of weirdos out there these days simply makes you and any other defenseless souls with you potential victims. I'd rather not have me or my wife be in that category but Hell, if it works for you, hope y'all stay lucky in all your future encounters. Cause if you spend enough time out hounding and camping, odds are sooner or later you will encounter a bad situation. The world ain't what it was back in the 50's...Mel

I didn't use to carry a gun down George West way when hunting wood until I heard the story about one wood hunter being threatened by a machete wielding drunken weirdo while hunting public roadsides like we all do down there ( county roads). Now I always carry. Only ever had to draw down on a fellow twice, once in the Cadys and once in Fort Rock Valley, Oregon. Both times I was glad it was me had the pistol and I never had to fire a shot.
Only problem I see in the scenario described in the above post was leaving the rancher with his rifle. That would make me a bit nervous. Rifle shoots way further than a pistol and if he was a real ahole or a nut he could've drove off a hundred yards and shot you easily. I'da gotten his name, taken his gun and phoned in a 911 call to the nearest sheriff to get him on scene. If no phone service, Id'a taken the guys gun and gone to where I had service or into town to the cops. If he was not basically a decent human being he could have shot you or turned around, grabbed his cell and called the sheriff on you and who's the local cop gonna believe? Either way, how the cop is gonna jump is a risk and usually they listen to the first person who phones in. All such encounters are hairy, that's for darn sure. Especially difficult here in Texas because Texas has rather liberal laws on who can be shot and under what circumstances. For darn sure you do not trespass....Mel

I hate snow and like heat. After deciding to eave fuggin CommieMexifornia, we initially thought Arizona but it is way too heavily populated for us now, and water is scarce. Decided Texas for a ton of reasons. Good gun and knife laws, lots of good rock sites, lots of horses and fairly cheap land. Lots of water, wildlife, no state income tax, friendly people, good politics ( Feels like you are actually in America, not some Commie, sanctuary state sh*thole), low crime rate and lots of wide open space and sunshine. Still have friends out west and after hearing what all is going on, would not go back to CommieMexifornia if they paid me a buttload of money....Mel
