I find faceting very interesting. I have a mechanical engineering background and this type of precision work really gets my brain going. But, wow, the costs to get into something like this are steep. And I can fully appreciate why the cost is there. I'm guessing it's pretty hard to cut something so precise on a "just good enough" setup. I'm enjoying your posts!

Garage Rocker, nice finds. I'm still recovering from my trip to the copper mine. Who knew my front porch had such amazing materials??!!

I would like to say again that placing the rubber mat between the blocks and my basement floor worked wonders to stop the "humming" sound from being annoying upstairs. Not sure if your workshop is detached from the house.

Love the shine. I guess I need to find some Owyhee picture jasper this summer. Finding for yourself? I found mine in a flat rate box. Unfortunately, I'm a long way from the Owyhee Mountains. Or anyplace that I could find rocks like any of those. My favorite type of rock hounding. Walking to my front porch and picking up my USPS flat rate box. I'm such a world traveler.

Yes they are awesome. I'm going to try tossing a handful directly into my Lot-O and see what happens. I'll be checking them often!

I was looking for information on tumbling and found the Rock Tumbling Hobby website thru Google. Clicked on the link from there to this forum.

Fossilman, yes, you need a vibe. I ran my obsidian in my QT66 with 46/70. It was the only thing in the barrel and I kept it kind of full. Kept adding new chunks each week as things got pulled. Then it went to the vibe for the "standard" 2 days in 120/220 SiC, 500 AO, 1000 AO and polish with lots of ceramics. I still have about 20% of the stuff that goes into the vibe get chipped. It gets thrown back in the rotary barrel to smooth out again. PITA, but I love the way it looks!

What grit are you using? I've been running mine in 60/90 in the rotary with weekly clean outs (I thought my 46/70 would be too coarse). They don't look that "rough". I'll post a picture on Sunday when I open the barrel again. I haven't done any hand work on the rocks either. I thought I would let them roll for a bit and then cut/grind if needed.
