After I tried out the big ungraded Silicon Carbide I started using only 30 Grit in my 1st stage tumbles using a 6 pound barrel
Here are some of the Largest grit pieces that were screened out of that stuff

@wooferhoubd Helpful, but how on Earth can a person accurately do fractions of when measuring? You would use the 1/4 cup scoop when you needed 3.3 tablespoons of grit Then use the 1/3 cup scoop when you needed 4.5 tablespoons of grit

I remember getting a box of that to try. Screened it to less than 1/4 inch and used it that way in a 6 pound barrel. Greatest grinding and lasted forever. I used the stuff that was bigger than 1/4 inch as Smalls.

- Another Note - Using Cerium Oxide for Polish has this exact same effect as the white spots in your pictures

You are using Too Much Soap Ok, how much should I use? Once the water is Saturated with soap , then more soap will just deposit on the rocks.
I'm normally washing with 6 pound barrels filled to the Top with water. Barrel is more than 3/4 full of polished rocks. No Beads.
Using a Fine cheese grater I scrape some Ivory Bar soap onto the top of the water. Almost covering the top of the water like a light snowfall.
Not a whole lot, just enough to break the surface tension of the water. Then rolling rocks about an hour works for me.
I am wanting to say . . . Using soap on my Brown Fractured Quartz rocks I collected from Yuma, I think it reduces the color that naturally appears in the fractures. When they are are tumbled this time, I don't plan to use soap as the Final stage of polishing , only plain filtered water.

Looks a lot like some brown quartz that I dug out of the side of a hill in Yuma, AZ.

Happy Birthday Wooferhound . How's that vibe project coming along? Oh My , I haven't done anything with that recently , but haven't put it away either , still spread across half my computer desk here. The museum has made me Full Time and I don't seem to have much spare time , and I was in Yuma Arizona for 8 days recently. Am wanting to get more done soon , don't give up on me yet.

Happy Birthday, Wooferhound ! Sounds like you had a great day, giving tours about what you love - the manned space program, and Space! When you love your work, it's not really a job! Sixty-five snuck up on you, did it? 65 is just a number. I'll be there later this year, will tell you how I feel about it then, lol. 1957 seems to have been a great year to be born, many of us RTHlings in that club! I do love my new job , I never thought I would like to work with the general public directly. Giving the tours for me is effortless and enjoyable. The Guests give me great compliments when it's finished and we chat some about Huntsville and and the areas that they come from. I am starting to feel the old age and I expect more of myself than I am capable of providing.
