I'm in a Laker period and here's a display of my faves. This grouping seemed extra special. The cool thing is that there are some that are chatoyant. The one in the solo shot has vertical bands and with just a little movement they move around. I should try to take a film clip! Many of them seem to have a bit of this, but this one is truly dramatic. So can one of you experts out there explain what causes chatoyance and why Lakers would sometimes have that quality? Thanks!!

You've got a big batch of super Lakers there!
That effect you mention on the tight-banded agates isn't chatoyance (like in Tiger eye), there is a name for it though, and strain my brain as best I can, I can't quite recall the name for it. Bah, someone help me out here before this mush-brain goes crazy!! Anyway, it is related to the tight-banding pattern and the optical properties that imparts to the rock -- happens in Lakers, Botswanas, any really nice, clean, tightly banded agate. It's cool, whatever the heck it is called! -Don

Super Lakers Puppie! I have yet to tumble any Lakers, but it's definitely on my list. Those are really nice , where did you get them? I really like the orange one in th etop pic, dead center, fourth row down...and your solo one. And can I come over for dinner....Laker Casserole is my favorite! Don, I think the tight banding is parrallax or something...isn't it?? If I would have been asked that a few years ago, I would have had no clue. I've come a long way; thanks to everyone here! Steve

That effect is called Parallex (sp im sure) kinda related to the iris effect- It is probably the coolest looking thin in person I have a couple of Agates that have that effect- it is seen in Botswana and LS Agates- and a few of the Brazilians- It is very dependent in CONTRASTING bands of clear and opaque material- the tighter the bands the better the effect- THose Lakers are Awesome Pup- And congrates on the SHINE!!! You nailed them Oh unfortunatly it is near impossible to photograph the effect- But once you see it in person- you can tell it from a from a picture!!

Thanks, everybody. I was thinking that chatoyance wasn't quite the right work. Thanks for the parallax definition. This rock looks like one of those moving cartoon pictures, whatever you call them. Steve, I agree, I know exactly which one you mean and it is one of our favorites too. It does stand out from the crowd. Photos make me crazy. The shine is amazing on the last 2 photos but doesn't show so much on the larger group pictures. I guess it works better if you don't have the sun shining right down. The other thing are those spots that make the group look like there are dings or imperfections. They don't look that way in person -- apparently the camera picks up what the eye doesn't. At least the parallax picture looks perfect. I got the lakers off ebay from a couple of sources. I got a couple of small groups of some of the larger and better ones for a reasonable price. Then I got a larger batch of a lower grade of them with a big size variety. I believe these came from Agatemeister. I like those a lot too, they have nice color and banding and the size variety is good, too, for using the smaller ones as fill in other batches. Somebody else on the board suggested this a while back.

Oooooooooooo yum Nice lakers puppie, I could just play in those all day! I've heard the effect called ghosting and also called the shadow effect. I think shadow fits it better because that's what it reminds me of when you move the stone, like a shadow passing back and forth behind the bands. Call it whatever, it's very very cool to see.

Steve spotted the pick of the litter right off, the root beer piece in the top center now has (2) votes.
