I'm looking for a good reference book for jaspers and agates. I see all the place names ind varietal names for these materials without haviunng the slightest idea what they are or what they (should) look like. If someone talks about Eden Valley Petrified wood or Woodward Ranch agate or Biggs Jasper, I have to see some or buy some. A single specimen doesn't tell you much about the range of form and color a material can have or anything about the source. It would be great to have such information at my fingertips. I have seen a new book "Agates" on Amazon that looks promising. DOes anyone else know of a good, well illustrated book on this group of materialS?

You might like "Agates: Treasures of the Earth " by Pabian, but many trade names and local varities, especially of jasper, are not in a book or field guide. You need to search the web and look at the pics.

Mark, I have that 'Agates: Treasures of the Earth' book, and it is great. BUT I also agree 100% with the above. Search the web and look at pictures. And once you start that you will find hours and hours of your time have disappeared----- Nona

I don't think a single reference exists, of course now that I've said that somebody will probably say "here it is" There is also the Agate Lexicon: snr.unl.edu/Data/AgateLexicon.asp that does a pretty thorough job of listing many of the names and attempts to place actual localities with them. And to try to show the breadth of color/pattern from a single location much less lots of locations would require an amazing amount of data.

Thanks, all. The Pabian book is the one I was referencing on Amazon. I checked out the sites in your replies and they're terrific resources. Dr. Pabian's name shos up again on one of them. Time to do some shopping.. Mark H.

That really is a great site. I've used the Agate Lexicon before, but always wanted pictures of each piece instead of a confirmation of when it was discovered.
