I never really got to spend much time with my mom's parents. We lived in New Hampshire and granny and granddad lived in Idaho. We'd get to see them once or twice a year at most.
Granny and granddad died within a couple of months of each other. I was only 10 or 11 at the time. Being so young, I didn't really know them well. I never got to do any of the things with them that I'd love to do today.
I can remember this box of rocks hanging around our basement when I was a kid. I used to love to take the rocks out and look at them. I think they were mostly petrified wood, but there were a few others that I wasn't able to identify back then. I knew they belonged to Granny and Granddad, but I grew up, went off to college and never thought about them again.
Now that I've rekindled my childhood love of rocks, I asked for a rock hammer for Christmas. Mom called to tell me that she wasn't going to get me one because she had one from Granny and Granddad. When I went up to visit my parents at Christmas, there was the old rock hammer. It's a nice leather wrapped Estwing, and it's been hanging around my parents' basement since Granny and Granddad died...about 25 years ago. It doesn't look like it was used much, but Granny and Granddad were big rockhounds, so I know they had plans for it.
Mom also passed onto me a couple of pieces of jewelry that belonged to Granny. Granny was a huge agate fan, and I think these pieces tell that well.
So while I will never have the chance to go rockhouding in Idaho with my grandparents, I will have a piece of them to take with me so they can be there in spirit.
