Hey all!
I have been away from this board for the better part of this year. We sold our house in the spring moved in June and have been super busy all summer both at work and home. Did I mention we have a 3 year old boy and a girl coming right after Christmas.
I needed a break and took off by myself to the tri-state region around Keokuk, Iowa. I met a super nice guy who allowed me onto 80 acres he owns. He let me camp in the wild.
and put me on one of his places for geodes.
Maybe I should start at the beginning. Three hours north of home I crossed out of Missouri into Iowa and then over the Mississippi into Hamilton IL.
I found his land and followed the logging roads.
I camped up on top of this hill and I would say the hike to the geodes was 3/4 of a mile. Going was easy as you can see down hill ain't bad!
Once you get to the creek you only have 1/4 mile to go.
Looks like a big geode was in that rock?
There are my buckets from yesterday.
This is a private spot and I was very blessed to dig it!
Ahhh, there they are!

Looks lunar!
I would fill 2 of these bucket around half full to keep my load light and balanced.
This is how I got them up the hill! Man o man, but worth it!
I stayed for two glorious days. I was sitting outside one morning and two bucks came up the hill. I sat super still and they walked right by me less than 30 feet away. They kept looking right at me. I guess they could see the smoke rise from my fire and finally I turned my head to keep watching them and they ran. Pretty cool, but no picture ;D
I had a very relaxing time. No running water except the creek (it was not too cold), No TV! No radio! No bad news! Just quiet!
But the time came to leave
Most of what I brought home came out of that shale bluff and they are delicate and light. The few I cracked are amazing. Full of citrine and flecks pf pyrite.
I picked up a few out of the creek and they are all together different. Bigger, harder, a thicker quartz layer...
But the ones I worked like crazy for are gorgeous.
Probably a couple hundred here??
Here is a four chamber one the land owner and I cracked on my way out. We got all four to break.
He had a hydraulic pipe cutter. I do not know how I am to break all these in half? Any ideas?
Well there you have it! My October rock retreat. I hope you enjoyed looking! I most certainly enjoyed bringing it to you!!
