Howdy folks, One of our members wanted to see these so I thought I'd go ahead and post here too. These are tumbled Goniobasis, a brackish water snail from Delaney's Rim near Wamsutter Wy. Oten misnamed Turritella. Only have just these few left as the kid love these and I've run out of my supply. If any of you ever get a supply of these loose snails and want to trade or sell a tumblerload full of rough specimens let me know.....Mel

I can see why they would get confused with turitella. I can see why the kids love them.
Man, you are talking out in the middle of the dessert. lol But maybe the next time I go to Cheyenne I will take the long way home. Do you have a GPS reading? Jim

Geez, those are really neat. I've never heard of them so thanks for the post. They look too delicate for a rotary.

Carlos; Those were done in a 33B rotary. They're actually quite tough and tumble easily.
Jim: *L* That trip was like 40 years ago. Don't even think GPS was invented yet and at any rate, I was just wandering about in a VW bus. Didn't even have AC *L*....Mel

Mel, while I get that these are not Turritella, Turritella is also from that area, right? My son, a buddy and I just hit an area a few hours from there this weekend ( see my thread in location, location, location) - I was thinking about exploring further west next weekend. Wamsutter is 3.5 hours from me so there is a pretty good chance this can happen. The place we went is about the same drive time but most of it is on dirt roads. I find an area called Delaney Rim: www.bing.com/maps/?lvl=12&cp=41.58139~-108.18139&FORM=MMREDRIs that close? Based on your recollection can you get me any closer? I will send you as much as can fit in a MFRB if you can get me where me and the kids can collect some. School starts for them this weekend, so I think they will be ready for something fun this weekend, and as my wife has already asked me to take the kids out of the house for the day (she is hosting a lady's brunch for church Saturday) I don't think I'll have to do any arm-twisting to make this happen. Let me know, I'm up for another trip!

Oh I see, "turritella agate" is actually these Goniobasis snails... still want to go.
I've been doing a little reading and am getting a bit fired up now. My son saw some petrified wood from "Blue Forest" in Wyoming and has been bugging me to take him. Turns out this is near there.
I'll be doing some homework this week, but this trip could be a lot of fun.

John, Check out this link for info on rock hounding for Agate, Jasper, Quartz and Chalcedony in Wyoming. It provides information on areas that the Goniobasis can be found. si02.blogspot.com/2011/04/agate-jasper-quartz-chalcendony-more.htmlOnce you are on the page, click edit in your browser, then "find on this page." Type in or paste Goniobasis, and it will highlight the word so you can quickly find the pertinent areas on the page (without having to read through everything). While I didn't see any GPS coordinates, it does list some map areas (i.e., T18N, R96W for Delaney Rim) for certain sites. Good luck, they look like they are pretty neat little things to find and tumble. Jean

Thanks Jean,
I'm trying to sort out the online map buying for Wyoming BLM - it is a little convoluted. I found an interactive map though so I can snag coords from that.

Hi, Just thought I'd chime in. Visited the area and found lots of the specimens last year. The guide is accurate, except you don't need to follow the ruts up the hill anymore. They have graded a nice road to the top of the hill (mesa) because there are now some gas wells up on top. Once you get on top, just look around. I think the better material is closer to the edge of the mesa. Thinking of going there myself if I get a chance in the next month even though it's a four hour trip. Definitely go to the Blue Forest if you get a chance. Some good smaller stuff on the ground, but you'll need to dig to find bigger stuff with the blue agate. Have fun, jeff

Thanks John and Jeff,
I won't be going to Blue Forest, after reading and looking at the maps, that is another 4+ hours from where we will be.
The kids will have fun finding snails and maybe we can luck into some sweetwaters or other agates while we are there.
