So, is this more or less water than you usually use? This is way less water than I normally use. I measured out 1 cup of water, which displaced by the rocks was a bit under half way full of water. It should be noted that I have a 4lb tumble bee barrel which is a tall barrel not wide. Its dimensions are Inner diameter: 4" Outer diameter: 4-1/2" Height: 7-1/2" and without rocks i would guess the water would have been maybe 2.5 inches deep at most. Good deal - the reason I asked is because I use only 1.5 cups of water for my 15 lb barrels. I did slowly decrease the water after I first started tumbling, and I saw much more progress. I like to check and rinse all my rocks about every 6-7 days; so there better be lots of progress made, or it's just not as satisfying. It's one of the most fun parts of tumbling to me - seeing the rocks change in stage 1. After this, you might want to try even less water to see if there is even more progress!

Hmm after reading this thread I feel I need to try adding less water next time...

For 3lb or smaller barrels, 36 SiC wouldn't work as well. I have a 4lb Barrel Tumble-Bee and I run about as close to the Max weight for my machine as I can, which is 6lbs 10oz. Hopefully 36 grit would work ok in that? Maybe. I believe one member on here uses it in a 6lb barrel, might be a 12lb. Won't know until you try. the smallest barrel I use in a 6lb. It's wider than taller but it still took 10 days to finish off 46 Sic.

I am not worried if it takes a bit longer to finish it off as long as I get stage 1 done faster in the long run, less repeat runs and less over all grit used.
