I whined for 2 days with sore muscles in my thighs after returning home. I knew I was out of shape but didn't think it was that bad, after all, I do work and climb ladders a lot. It wasn't that big of cliff and I didn't hike that far! Turns out the Rona finally got me. Tested positive yesterday.

Sorry to hear that. I'm sure you know the drill by now. Feel better soon!

Thanks, I'm already 2 days on the downhill side of it, unless something unforseen happens. I'm much more concerned about my wife. I'm really hoping hers doesn't get worse. I'm doing everything I can to take care of her.

I would 2nd what MsAli said about Mariposite, I can give you approx coordinates of the main dig or you can swing by my house off hwy 49 near Bootjack and pick me up and we'll find it. OR we can go pry a few mariposite rocks out of the Catheys Valley park historical marker or the Hwy 140 bridge as you come into Mariposa (just kidding ... they are very well cemented in place grrr...) Eastman Lake and surrounding area for andulasite (google "cross rocks"). Fun little crystal buggers - once your brain adjusts and you finally "see" them you see them everywhere. Snelling rockpiles for red/yellow jaspers - or take your 4x4 up the hill to Hunters Valley for the real deal Hornitos Poppy. Head across the valley to Coalinga and up to Clear Creek and climb up to the Aurora mine for Plasma Agate. Access permits are still required I believe. Hey Tommy, could I get those coordinates for the main dig? This will be my first intentional hounding trip so I’m trying to make it go smoothly, thanks!

Tommy if you need some help exploring some of those quartz veins let me know! Unfortunately our biggest quartz vein goes right across our main driveway haha. Quartz veins are interesting! Groundwaters flow everywhere, usually (depending on pH - "The Power of Hydrogen") dissolving or depositing calcite. When something BIG creates lots of shockwaves - continental collision, asteroid impact, volcanic explosion, earthquake, landslide - silica rocks shatter, Silica bonds are broken and water grabs on with hydrogen bonds. The area is flooded with silica gel! That is when geodes, thundereggs, pet wood and dino bone becomes agatized.

Since this thread resurrected, I have a CA question. We will be in a park in Simi Valley for 2 nights on our way home and go to San Pedro while there. Are there any spots worth exploring in the vicinity? Tommyrockbrain

Did it go smoothly? Honestly I do not have coordinates for the mariposite outcrop - I used to have written instructions how to find it and I went looking for those and got sidetracked.

Jurassic Time ended with gold on the mountain tops, quartz and gold in fractures. Geologists have tried to blame volcanoes, but they came later.

Rockoonz Get out of that hot valley and head over to the ocean! Try Oxnard or Ventura. Do some beachcombing, get your feet wet and look for pretty beach tumbles.👍 Oh, and post a picture or two.

Are there any spots worth exploring in the vicinity? Tommy rockbrain Lee, even though I am in that area, I've never hounded any spots here. Unfortunately, I wouldn't even begin to know where to send you. If Sabre52 was on, he was a long time resident of our County, and I'm sure he might be able to tell you about some of his old haunts. Since you're heading down to San Pedro, you're going to be near the Palos Verdes Penninsula where you can hound near the water. I found this FB group in a search about PV, so perhaps you can go through it and glean some information. In one of the posts, it looks like there is one guy who (was?) the President of a local club, and he mentions hounding on the beaches near Oxnard. If you do FB, look for the Oxnard Gem and Mineral Society. According to a post in that group, there may be some resources for hounding in the area. www.facebook.com/groups/411978609512229/posts/412512066125550/ETA: Lee, when are you going to be in Simi?
