I will, Tela! He really appreciated all the messages of encouragement. We're planning on taking a ride to the rehab place sometime next week for a short visit once Vince is healed up enough.

I’m b-a-a-a-ck (spoken in my best Schwarzenegger imitation). I write this with very mixed feelings. First, my apologies to those who very generously posted above with some of the most thoughtful and kind words I’ve ever read. Thank you all. It’s taken me far too long to bring you up to date. I received reports of all your kind wishes while in the hospital and they wee a big factor in my recovery. Second, my deepest sympathy to Robin for the loss of her husband Vince. This was a huge shock to me personally and has been a big factor in my slowness in writing this update. Vince, in addition to being a valuable and wise member here, had become a close personal friend. His unexpected passing has been a major factor in the deep depression that’s affected me during my recuperation. Apart from a few remaining aches and pains and difficulty walking I’m pretty well on the mend. What happened to me was rather strange and frightening. It all began pretty routinely. A cap from a molar came off. When I saw a dentist to replace it he said I might need a root canal and referred me to a specialist. Indeed, I needed the root canal. I told the endodontist I needed an antibiotic prior to doing the work to prevent infection because I have an artificial heart valve. He didn’t thjnk it was necessary so I had the work done. Big Mistake! About 3 weeks later I came down with what I thought was a bad case of the flu. I had a fever, chills and dizziness. One evening while walking to the bathroom I passed out and took a very hard fall. While the fall did considerable physical damage, ironically I think it saved my life. It’s the reason I want to Emergency where I was admitted to the hospital for my injuries, a bad case of pneumonia and sepsis. Thankfully the doctor was able to trace the sepsis to the root canal work and saved my life with timely antibiotic infusions (which continued twice daily for 6 weeks at home after my release. ) Scary fact: sepsis often kills the victim within 48 hours. I am a very lucky person and give thanks for that. Apart from having to learn to walk again after nearly 2 months in hospital and lots of aches and pains, I’m coming along pretty well. The depression is slowly easing and I’m taking an interest in life again. I even worked on a cabochon the other day, though I didn’t have the stamina to finish it. Little by little… Again, thank you all for your support , prayers and good wishes. They were very important to my recovery.

The big guy was looking out for you. It must have been all those prayers from your RTH family. I hope the depression lifts soon.
Next time the dentist asks about the antibiotics- I'll think twice. Thank you for that bit of wisdom.

I am so happy to hear that you've managed fight through your ordeal successfully, Rick. Best wishes and hope for successfully conquering the depression! I experienced a clinical depression about 20 years ago, so I know how debilitating and dangerous that can be.
My wife's mother spent her last few years living with us. Our dentist became hers, and she (the dentist) always prescribed antibiotics for her — even for teeth cleaning!
I am looking forward to your continued RTH posts. Not just for the content but also for your fine writing.

gemfeller how about a hallelujah! Wow! I am very glad to hear your physical wounds are healing and that you determined the bout of the blues is on the up swing. I pray in the name of Jesus you would strengthen and mend genfellers heart from the loss of his dear friend Vince and I pray a double dose of your peace that goes beyond understanding aswell as that Joy would again return to this man, in Jesus name.

gemfeller. I’m so happy to hear you are improving, and to even just to hear from you. Tells me things are looking up. RTHlings are a tough bunch. Sepsis with pneumonia is serious, but you beat it. My husband beat it twice AND beat septic shock. Looking forward to hearing more from you and hearing of further improvement.

Glad you're on the mend Rick, think about you from time to time. You kind of looked like Christopher Lee in that hospital bed

Welcome back, Rick gemfeller! Sorry you had to go through that, but glad you recovered and were able to come back to us RTHLings. That was quite a stretch of time you were away, but we are glad to have you back! Welcome back to the fold. I'll bet you are in no hurry to go anywhere near a hospital anytime soon. When I had heard you were in the hospital with sepsis, I was like, how did that happen? Thank you for telling your story. My husband has had his aortic valve replaced not too long ago. I just told him what happened to you. He might remember when he needs dental work to be sure to go on antibiotics beforehand, but maybe not. If not, I guess I'll just have to remind him. While falling at home is not normally a good thing, in this case it was, in that it got you to go to the ER. In a way, it is like what happened to me - the strange symptoms that had my husband call an ambulance to take me to the hospital. They first thing tested me for Covid - I tested positive, and further testing and an MRI revealed the brain tumor (the reason I was "loopy"). A team of neurosurgeons will be removing it on June 22nd. Had I not gone to the hospital, it would not have been found. Serendipity! Rick, we are all so glad you pulled through! Rest up, and no setbacks, please. Jean
