skrapyard Make sure you get some pics of your geodes up when you get a chance! I'm definitely curious, and I'll use them to convince the misuses we should head up there next year!!

Lol. I saw those pics posted on Reddit. Really had them screeching over there 😂 Yeah there were a few howler monkeys there that were upset. I dont think they realize we were digging in a creek bed wall, its not like I came out with an excavator and dug a giant hole on public property lol.

In a couple hours, they may be really wet. Somehow the rain missed us all weekend while digging. There were a few showers overnight but everything was relatively dry so things worked out great.

Heres a few pics of another dig site and the haul for the weekend. Most of the finds were underwater so I channeled my inner raccoon and basically was just feeling around underwater until I felt a geode, then popped them out with a gad bar. This dig site was on some Amish land and they helped everyone get their buckets of geodes back to their cars. One guy found a roughly 400lb geode and they hauled it up out of the river with one of their horses. When it got loaded into their minivan it sagged so much I think the tire was almost touching the inner wheel well. The Amish also had some baked goods and fresh homemade ice cream available at the site so I had to try it. That ice cream was possibly the best I have ever had! Ive got quite a bit of sorting and work to do over the next week. And I finally I found a nice, large size geode. I seriously just kinda sat and stared at it for about an hour when I got home last night. Im gonna have to build some sort of display for it since it doesnt fit on any of my mineral specimen shelves. Pic dump incoming...

People would always get sooooo upset with me. Mad that I would dig material and not claim sites. I don’t claim because I don’t want to put a road map out on the internet where my spots are for hundreds more people to come in and dig. I get out what I want, bury spots back up and go on my way.

Next year, I think I need to shadow skrapyard! Though my haul was quite a bit smaller (only 3 buckets) I was pretty chuffed at finding a snowball on my first day. Here’s the snowball and my largest find

Yowza! I love geodes and thank you very much for relating that amazing experience. Those are some epic finds! Sounds like you had a blast!
Realrockhound: I have mad respect in your approach. Sometimes to avoid a whole bunnch of ppl coming up and messing up a site, you have to take those measures.

That is an awesome snowball squarepetals ! The few that Ive ever found were filled with mud, iron stained, and the shell crumbled when cracking them open. Yours split open perfectly I spent all evening last night power washing geodes and sorting them by size. It doesnt look like I made much progress because there are so many of them. I did get a few cut open on the saw and started up the flat lap with them on it so by the end of this week Ill have a few polished ones to post some pics of. We are already planning for the fest next year. Its addictive lol. Maybe next year we can get a few more people from RTH to meet up and dig together or have a little BBQ and geode cracking party in the parking lot.

Thanks skrapyard! The snowball was the first geode opened last weekend. The second was a solid and good reminder that picking good ones takes a lot of practice. Speaking of solids, I picked up a couple that I’m wondering if they would look better polished or left as is. One looks like pink calcite, the other smoky quartz. Thoughts? And count me in for a get together at next year’s fest!

squarepetals I've never tried polishing any of the calcite ones. It could be cool, I'd say go for it. You could probably get it done on a cab machine as long as it isn't too big. It might take a while though. I've found having them saw cut instead of cracked open helps since it takes forever to grind down the jagged edge when they're cracked vs. cut. If your ever up for it you can shoot me a message and come by to use my saws or crackers if you need to.
