Austin, Tx. hit a low for yesterday of 15 which was the record for this day. The oranges and other plants around(outside) the house are toast but so far the heated garage that is filled with potted plants is a nice 70 with two space heaters and multiple lights. The garage has many large potted Asian-semitropical plants that I am taking care of for one month while my neighbors are visiting relatives 8800 miles away in a nice warm climate. Our house-zone 8- is also filled with plants from the deck and creates a house interior that looks like an arboretum with very colorful leaves and shapes/patterns. Cold outside but warm inside as long as the gas and electric work. Victor, do you bring in any lizards/critters indoors with the plants? I bring the snake plants in every year during the winter and every now and then a lean brown lizard will show up around the planters.

NOAA: There is a one-in-three chance that 2024 will be warmer than 2023, and a 99% chance that 2024 will rank among the top five warmest years. Meanwhile . . .

I recently saw an article about the largest of the great apes to ever grace the planet were driven to extinction by climate change 100s of thousands of years ago.

Rickb, pill bugs, ladybugs, roaches, earwigs, ants and chameleons definitely make it into the house. There is a symbiosis with what lives in the soil and plant combo outside and I don't pretreat with any chemicals before the short inside visit. I do find it quite interesting the variety of critters that are living on or near the plants.

It was 17°F this morning in Western Washington. It was 31°F at 2:00 PM when I went outside to do a vibe bowl cleanout and it seemed pretty mild.

This mornings paper said road conditions will improve when the ice melts, what a thought.

Billings MT had more than 30 below for two nights and a day and bottomed out at -36 or -39 for us down by the river. I was lucky enough to have the flu and didn't have to go out for a week but since I live in a travel trailer my water supply was off that whole week. It was like a holiday though because my son had to take care of keeping the propane flowing. Never thought I would see a good side of the flu. Pretty damn hard keeping it warm inside when the wind was cruising by at over 30 mph too. Now some areas are flooding because the ice jambs are pilling up high. I should be in Arizona with Tony again.

Gee, I wonder how I survived weekend overnight hikes at 0 degrees F with a 15 mph wind and a foot or two of snow on the ground or mowing the lawn with a push mower at 100 F with humidity at 80% before they invented all these stats. Of course I was a youngster then in the 1950s and 60s. A funny story: I was at a party in Gainesville FL and all the people were wildlife biologists from the university there where my sister teaches. Most of the people were either FL natives or they had been down there for forty years. My brother in law was there and he lived and taught in Fairbanks, AK for 40 years studying caribou and bears. One of the FL natives asked him how could he live in such a cold place. His response was as it gets colder you simply add more clothing, then he asked how could they stand such heat and humidity because you can only get so naked!

It only got down to -8 last night here in northwestern Missouri. Unfortunately, our furnace went out at 4:00 yesterday afternoon (can you believe that timing). We managed to get someone out to look at it last night but they couldn't figure out exactly what was wrong (something with the burners). Probably looking at a new furnace and this one is only 4 years old (and I thought tumbler motors were bad). They are going to talk with manufacturer on Monday morning. So we managed to limp by with some space heaters and seem to have kept everything from freezing. Supposed to be in 30s and 40s after today so we will be in heat city.

20s here, too. Cold enough for me. The high should be 32.
