Some of my friends have said you do not have to be very smart to tumble rocks!! Oh Yeah.. First we must know our numbers: count to 7 days to re-charge the tumbler.. Second we must know our colors-red jasper from blue sodalite-etc. Third-the skills necessary take lots of IQ points-like cleaning the barrels thoroughly before changing grit size-and keeping the loretone shafts oiled.. Forth-grading the rocks according to size and hardness is also worthy of a PhD.. So all of you people who: 1. build rockets 2. astronomists 3. follow Stephan Hawking..You have nothing on us..We are superior to fisherman and bowlers!!!

Easy Birdseed, I am both a tumbler and a fisherman!
Where does that place me? Probably at the bottom of the heap! HAHA. I guess I should count my lucky stars (if I could count that high) that I don't count bowling as one of my hobbies!

VERY FUNNY!!! But can a fisherman: 1. measure 1TBS of grit for every pound of rock? 2. break a rock with a 3lb hammer with just 1 blow? 3. blow the top of a 12lb tumbler so it spills all over his wife's laundry? WELL? ???WAITING?

Hello;D I think that "Real friends" will never say "you do not have to be very smart to tumble rocks" to a "friend that they know is in the hobby. Beware of that type of "friends" that are trying to put you down. That person(s) seems to have a lot of inner issues and his/her anger is directed at You, it is been released at you as a form of displaced or indirect hostility. If you decide to keep those "friends" just ask them what is the reason for their coments and explain to them "As you can never be able to accurately judge a book just by looking at it's cover, you can never be able to accurately judge people's IQ just by the hobbies they pursue. Generalizations are never accurate". They will actually understand that you got them and will run away from you, or, will be incapable to understand what you say at all! Just be careful with the friends you chose.

Friends? I would not call them friends ... if they try to degrade you or what you enjoy in life. Who are they, to put labels on you or call you un-intelligent. Each one of us has varying degrees of intelligence. We all have weaknesses and strengths in our own aspects of life. Just because I do not know much about flying a plane ... does not mean that I am incapable of learning. I would have to re-consider whether my "friends" were worth my time. That's my three cents worth Have a great weekend, John

Herm,
No problem from here. One thing I like about this forum is the ideas, opinions and humor that folks have on this forum. I would be the first to admit that I am not the sharpest tool in the shed. I try admitting it at work, but they still keep giving me projects.
I do what I like to do, and if someone else doesn't like my hobbies, then that is too bad for them, i.e. more rocks and more fish for me.

I don't fish a lot , but when I do , I whack this fish out of the water with one blow of my 3 pound rod, take it home and measure one tablespoon of yummy butter to fry my 1 pound fish. I will not annoy my darling wife with the splashes of the frying pan , she's too precious to me.
So why bother waiting ?? ?? ?? Ah the rocks take a whole week in grit.

Some of my friends have said you do not have to be very smart to tumble rocks!! My experience has been just the opposite. I have met more people who have bought tumblers, tried to polish rocks, got frustrated, and the tumbler now collects dust on the shelf. They always want to know how I learned to do it and they think that I must really be smart to be able to do it. In my case, I guess I was just either too dumb or too stubborn to quit. I just kept banging my head against the wall until I got it right. But then, that's why I joined this board when Andy started it. I'm always ready to help anybody succeed in this hobby without so much of the pain. I think that the world already has enough "dust collecters". Ron
