I just think the whole thing is incredible. It reads like a Jack London story. I am happy to be alive and well after some of the choices I have made and things I have gone through in my life, but never have any of my choices taken me so far away from comfort that it became a non-option. It urks me to hear of people complain...about anything. Doc- I appreciate the time you took to condense and write all this for us to read and reflect. Thanks -Michael

you were talking about a digital camera, Doc, we ALL would love to see pics of your shop and your creations and, well, frankly, just about anything you found interesting. (Billy Bob Bubba and his brother Skanky)
did you get your steak dinner yet?

Krazy, my dentures are still not fitting right. The jaw is settling down and the dentures still feel foreign. Even though I was frozen years ago, the event still lingers! My steak dinner is a bowl of pok and beans! If I am lucky, I can chew one bean and feel the sensation. We hope to get a digital camera, when we have caught up on the expense of our move to Los Angeles. We got hit pretty hard. Soon, I will be the shutterbug. I am going to find out what happened to the photo shoot also. No word from the photographer.

pok and beans, lol.. there was a restaurant here (long gone now) theat used to feature Bok and Squeak (Chicken and Pork..um make the bok, bok, bok sound, it helps) on the menu.
what kind of torch would you recommend for silver working, Doc? and what gas? acetlylene or propane? i've been getting the kit together but haven't made any major purchases yet.
thanks, KD

Krazy, for general silver work, nothing beats a 12$ Bernzomatic! It is my standard money maker. For melting for casting, I use a Prestolite with acetylene, or a Bernzomatic high temp torch. So far, I have left out the mixed gases. For small work, I use the Bernzomatic mini-torch. Those three torches, will cover all silver work. It is important to use an antifirescale medium. I prefer alcohol and boric acid solution, ignited on the work. For the inexperienced to use oxygen with either acetylene or propane, it is a signature for disaster. The oxygen will cut through the silver, mixed improperly, or make the heat too central and make a melt when it is not wanted the least. I can spot heat gold and solder before the heat reaches the stone in most cases. Oxygen really helps there. Silver, oxygen gets in the way! It oxidises the work before you can tell, and prevent a solder joint. Repairing a prong on a silver piece, the oxygen will melt the silver before you can stop the heating. With the two gas soldering, I use a Smith Mini torch. I use tips 4 and 3. 4 for general smithing, 3 for rope chain repairs. A trick for soldering rope chains, use a single edge razor for an heat shield. The flame passes through the center cutout on the blade, and does not hit the main chain. Makes life simple. I also use only hard solders for repairs, and fabricating. Hard solders match the parent colour of the work piece and are the only legal repairs on jewelery. The old stand bye, Bernzomatic also has to be used on a fire pad. Silver must have the heat reflected back on the piece. When soldering, the piece is brought to within frightening tolerance of the piece melting. To practice, melt silver. Put a piece of wire on a piece of 2 X 6 and melt it into a ball. Learning to melt the metal first helps control soldering when fabricating. The flux I use, is borax 15% boric acid 10$, propylene glycol 75%. The propylene glycol, antifreeze, acts as a pickling agent when soldering helping to combat firescale. Good luck.

thanks, Doc!
i have been practising making little silver balls with 22 ga. fine silver. at the course that i am taking they have plumbed propane and an air mix. i've bought an annealing pan but not a fire pad yet. i've got a nice bench pin and a bracelet mandrel.
things are progressing slowly but at a comfortable pace.
thanks for the info,
KD

Doc, I am in awe. You are certainly a person who can say, for better or for worse, "I did it my way". I cannot and will not do things to the extreme (nor do I desire such a life) but I admire people who take the dare in life. csroc

It was not living life to the edge. It was what I was left with after people picked the pieces clean. I just never laid down and expected people to come to my rescue. They say a lot, and find a way out. I found it too painful to quit. Even the slings and arrows were better than living in shame.

Baz, I believe one of the reasons for the success of this forum is directly from Mark. All I know, is a long time ago on this forum, I responded to a thread on emerald tumbling. From that point, I have watched this forum grow. Mark rarely steps in. We seem to be self governing. I have learned a lot by supplying URLs on information I had seen years ago. The journey has been amazing. I miss Alaska terribly. I have been trying to figuire out a way to move back there, and make an income. The years have been tough on me. My exposure from tere has left me in an interesting position. I am intolerant to the heat, and I am intolerant to the cold. Hah! I used to live outside in -45 to -60*. I haven't seen 30* since I left, but, I turn blue at 40*. I rarely go outside down here. My eyes cannot tolerate the light, my body is stiff and hurts all the time. Floriduh is my prison these days. I see nothing but tourists. Gads all that bulbber, hawiian shirts, and Birkenstocks.
