I'm betting on agatized as well, but am happy to add more confusion. Near me, there are beds of opal. Some is shiny (I refer to it as "wrapped in cellophane"), and some is not--until it is broken. There are also frequently pieces that have what is clearly opal attached to what appears to be agate. I've cabbed the "mixtures" and there is a definite difference in hardness.
Also, some of the opal crazes when it is frozen, but some of the large pieces surrounding part of my front yard have not--and I have no idea why not.
And I completely agree that the opal is always lighter than the agate, at least in what I have found.
