I finally finished this batch!!! I am a little bummed because I worked really hard on these, and then I blow these pictures up and I see scratches!!!! But I can't see them when I look at them, so I guess I am going blind!!! Hopefully no one will notice when they are worn!! This first cab I thought of one person Bobby1!!! It is a Montana, with a perfect little tabby cat!!! I am sending this to Bob!!! Montana I really wanted to keep working on the box from WoodyRock! He sent a bunch of Washington stuff he collects. This is my fav of the group. I think it must be wood, it was really hard!!! Wood? Per Woody it is Carnelian Carnelian Mt. St. Helen's Carnelian-I love this yellow stuff Teanaway Nephrite-!!! Toutle WA Jasper Davis Creek Mahogany Obsidian- Never cabbed obsidian, I love how shiny this gets!!! Red Jasper stuff from Mossyrockhound!! Love this!!! Tee Pee Canyon Agate Another Tee Pee Ocean Jasper I really like big cabs but I think the size is causing me problems!! I think that is why I am getting so many scratched areas!! Does anyone have any suggestions for the cabs that are 2 inches or more? Amber

Wowsers great bunch of cabs there. I don't see many scratches at all and your shapes are great. That first teepee is awesome and I like the way you balanced the pattern in the shape. That ocean jasper looks like it has has green roses in it. So many nice cabs. I even see the cat in the first one. Can't wait to see them in person.

Wow Amber! Your cabs all look great to me! Keep up the good work! My favorite one is the carnelian that goes from black at the bottom to clear at the top.

Amber you made some gorgeous cabs! The pet wood is my absolute favorite, not only amongst this batch but amongst all you cabbed so far I think. Perfect shape & shine and killer colors! The two carnellians pictured after the pet wood are also gorgeous.
As for the big cabs problems, I think you shouldn't leave any flat areas on them. The bigger the cab, the heavier to achieve that goal. But there was a post some times ago where someone (don't remember who, sorry) said he is sanding the cab orienting it obliquely relative to the wheel, using the edge of the expando wheel for the sanding. I kinda addapted this technique to what I use for cabbing and it works, it seems that the local deformation of the wheel under the pressure of the cab creates a very low dome.

The whole group is gorgeous. It took a moment to see the cat. That is so cool. Is that OJ from the same slab as the other OJ you posted that is all honey color. Looks it but with the contrasting dark orbys in there. I love the contrast.

Nice cabs! The MT. St. Helens is great, I love the color. The Teepee's have great patterns and colors. I like the explosions of little red dots.
For big cabs, you need to adjust your angles as you build the dome. For small cabs, my angles are 45,60,75,80 or approximately. For big cabs it's more like 60,70,75,80,85 or shallower. One thing you can try is to draw concentric circles of smaller and smaller diameters within your shape, just don't use a marker, use an aluminum pencil. After you have the set of lines drawn, focus on making each angle cut walk up to the lines. Each succesive cut should also cut halfway into the previous step on the cab. In the end you should have a very small dot in the center.
In the end, big cabs are always fairly flat in the center and tough to get scratch free. To check for scratches as I'm working them, I use low angle light. Hold the cab between you and a light source, with the light not pointing directly at the cab. The light should be glancing off the cab at a low angle. This makes the scratches easy to see.

What a Wonderful Set of cabs Amber! You're doing fabulous I love those Teepee's...especially the 1st one. What some amazing colors. The Mt. St. Helens Carnelian is my #2 Fav. And I have to pick Teepee Canyon #3 as my 3rd pick. All of them are sensational and so don't be down on yourself about the tiny scratches. It's harder to get scratches out of bigger cabs. They just take a little longer...so you have to check more frequently. Have you cut any Lagunas up yet??? ;D Steve

Wow, Amber...this is a truly AWESOME batch! You're really getting good, girl! I LOVE those carnelian pieces, especially the first one. And that first teepee is spectacular, as well! You did a fantastic job on that obsidian...I always have a tough time with obsidian, but yours looks amazing!

Wow! YOU are getting good. Love the tp canyon, and all the carnelian, but I think the Toutle might be your best yet, at least to me. The shape to pattern is just wonderful! That is a great cab. T
