The AP "Navy snipers on the fantail of a destroyer cut down three Somali pirates in a lifeboat and rescued an American sea captain in a surprise nighttime assault in choppy seas" Those guys sniped the pirates in choppy seas, at night? The Navy Seals are friggin' awesome!

I went through Ranger School with a Navy Seal who was on Team 5. He was about 5'10", maybe 150 lbs but he could knock the daylights out of every one of us. Those guys are bad to the bone.

How wonderful.
The best part is that nobody was injured or killed except the perps.
You gotta give the USA a grade of 100 on this one. Our armed forces performed admirably. No blustery show of bullshit, just get the job done and minimize collateral damage. I guess you have to give credit where it is due. The Obama haters and naysayers are wrong again. Once again Talk Radio eats crow as this administration comes through with flying colors. A lot of people rooting against the USA are forced to admire us instead. True patriotism at its best!
I just wish they could have withheld details of the rescue. I understand it is almost impossible to keep everything under wraps. Publicizing the details just makes the next rescue attempt that much harder and makes it more perilous for the next captured merchant ship.
I love the bluster coming out of the pirates about getting even. They must be awfully surprised after picking on the wrong ship. We were very fortunate that no Americans were killed, seems amazing, doesn't it.
After this incident, I'd be surprised if we don't start arming all American ships with non-lethal weapons, say Tazers, to repel anyone trying to board our ships. I was talking with someone Saturday night about this incident. I thought we should have sent some Navy Seal divers to poke some holes in the lifeboat. He insisted that the Pirates would kill thge captain and blow up the Cargo vessal if we did. Glad it didn't come to that.
God Bless the United States of America

I'm really confused by the pirates vowing revenge. They threatened one of our citizens with death in an attempt to extort money from us. When you get shot in the commission of a violent criminal act your friends and family don't get to swear revenge. That just comes with the territory. That's like a beekeeper swearing revenge when he gets stung by a bee.

chass i agree with you on every point you made but 1....oh let me say thumbs up to obama for giving the captain of the bainbridge the go ahead to fire when the captain thought the time was right....or needed.
the only part i disagree with is the non-lethal part....we have armed air marshalls on flights....why not armed ship marshalls?....take a couple of hundred pirates out....sink 10 or 12 boats of pirates....i bet they will think twice about trying to board a ship then....kev.

Chas: “I just wish they could have withheld details of the rescue.”
Here’s a government that can never do this, that, or the next thing (like put prisoners on trial) because it would disclose sacrosanct “sources and methods”. And here they go blabbin’ everything like an eighth grader that just copped his first feel.
There's your blustery show of bullshit. Idiots.

Any more details on this story? Were they confirmed apricot shots or standard sniper shots? The stomach knots just thinking of the tension at the time. Well done guys

Yup, gotta give Obama props for staying the heck out of the military's way and letting them do their job which they do do so well! Gonna be interesting seeing if the situation escalates. Probably would not be a bad thing to send in the Marines and thin out some of those pirate nests along the coast too. Marines did that with the Barbary Pirates quite some time ago. That old 'Shores of Tripoli " thingee. Was a good idea then and probably is now days too.....Mel

I'm wondering why we don't send a couple destroyers to harass the mother ship that is supplying the boats and personnel for the pirate attacks? Provide constant surveillance every time a pirate boat leaves the mother ship. Bob

How do four guys in a dingy hijack a huge container ship anyway? The rails of those ships are three or four stories above water.

rich you sent me off to the dictionary again ;D{sacrosanct}.
rogue not sure what an apricot shot is....but it was 3 snipers that all fired at the same time killing all 3 pirates instantly...im amazed how they could do this...with the boat moving on the waves and such.
10 thumbs......they board all kind of ways....from what i have read....these huge ships may only have 1 person on deck at any given time....mostly at night....the lights are focused to light the deck of the ship...they board at night usually....when looking over the water from the deck one sees nothing....kinda like looking out your window at night....but if you were outside looking in you could see a lot.
they use grappling hooks and ropes....some ships have ladders welded to the side of them...a lot of times mostly i think....when they see rocket launchers pointed at them....they invite them onboard knowing for the most part no harm will come to them when the ransom is paid...and they will be set on there way.
susan...me and colton was talking about what you mentioned last night....it aint to far fetched to believe al queda could talk some of these guys into taking a speed boat and running out and planting explosives with timers on the side of some ships and speeding away far enough to watch the big boom.....or giving hostages to them to be beheaded on film......but on the flipside....that would be really bad for there business.
i really dont think they will be hit on land....not enough harm being done at this time.....right now its only money....if that changes...i hope obama has the kahunas to do something about it....kev.

Wouldn't it suck to have no other way to make a living? I don't know... those guys out front of Treasure Island in Las Vegas made it look pretty fun. Plus prosthetic technology has come a long way; fully articulated limbs and fingers - no more peg legs and hooks. Parrots are available at almost every strip mall pet store. It's obviously a growth industry during a tough economy. I'd want to see the benefits and retirement plan first but other than that I'm ready to sign up.
