I agree with the K.I.S.S. theory, less is more, so to speak, when it comes to forums. That said, I recall that when I first visited this board, the top of the page took me to Andy aka Mark's tumbling instructions and pictures. That covers the basics well. I haven't used the search feature much, but I bet it would find tumbling-related material in the threads pretty easily.

KD, OK we will sue, got lots of money? Just kidding of course. But I agree with Alice and Rich, post where the post goes. I try to read down the list of forums, see if any new comments have been made since I was in last if not I go on. But with so many not approiate (SP), posts in general forum, sometimes I don't have time to go through them all, I get stuck in general. I think the board is just fine. But I think Members Photos should be just that, not restricted to tumbling. Like the this is me post, that is still my favorite thread, getting to know each other. But I also feel if you want to stick a photo in an approiate forum you should, like a wedding photo in the everything else forum, (just an example). Just my 2 cents worth. Longest post I have made in a long time. Terry

I don't know- I like the cab section- but seldom visit the wrapping section- I almost never go into the tips section and only peek at the vendors section- but they are there if I want them- seems to me that adding much more just makes things MORE difficult- I mean do I post a tumble finished cab in the cab section- tumble section- or both? I mean soon we could have a PET wood section only (only post photos of pet wood) or a Idon'tknowit section- I remember the old board- We had the general, vendors, photos, location, life etc. and a couple others that I hardly ever visited so I vote for the K.I.S.S

Be kind of redundant to post them in both but it's kind of hard to say which one. I've got some tumbles that I shaped and put a nice edge on, they are going to resemble cabs more than a tumbled rock but do they qualify for the cab section, probably not because they aren't actually cabs. It's a rather gray area.
I look at the cab and wire-wrapping forums as a place to post the pictures of said items and for people to ask questions that are about that specific side of the hobby. People who aren't into that side may never look there, or might stop by to see the pics and get interested in how it's done.

I agree with Cher. It is process (e.g., equipment) not shape that distinguishes the areas.

I kind of like it the way it is .if I have a question that I can't fit in anyplace I guess i'd put it in general but if the basic problem is with all the rest of the information on the board newbies can't find answers to tumbling lets just put one for tumbling like we have for wirewrapping and cabachons it still won't stop all the problems but this is a fun board and if I can't find something right away well thats were patience comes in. Hi All, Interesting debate,
I enjoy the board as it is also,
1 - It has quite a variety
2- if you add more sections it could get confusing
3- There are some sections I dont visit now and im sure others dont visit some I visit, so what ! arnt we all different ?
We have a wide range of subjects Yet some complain only a few boards are used a lot
Surley ADDING more sections will just amplifie this problem
OR is it a problem ? Is the board developing into --
- 1 a general debating / sharing section
- 2ndly -- the speciality sections
This is good as I can see it, it might look like a lot of confusion, but im sure many of the newer members will testyfie of being helped in this layout.

I think it's just fine the way it is. It's not broken and doesn't need fixing! It's just growing! I like it the way it is. I don't care where the pictures are, I just love viewing them. We need things to post and look at while the tumblers are tumbling away. Variety is a good thing. There is something for everyone and no problem finding it.

I think its better left the way it is aswell for now in here. I am into this "KISS" thing - I call it (GDIS - Good Design Is Simple) - like the woodwork teacher used to say (every DAY!). Moving posts - well for a note - I think that "moving posts for reasons of misplacement" isnt what I mean by "policing". Thats like moving or deleting posts due to the offence they cause - and I try to avoid that - as not EVERYONE is offended very often - maybe 1 time in a year - or 2 times maybe. Moving threads to make them on topic with a given board within a forum is an influence of my "judgement" on the original poster and the posted message. Very often - this can upset a person - because it is often the case that there are reasons I know nothing about which caused the person to do what they did. Granted this doesnt occur all the time - but sometimes. Occasionally a post may be made in a higher traffic forum which is off topic but the poster needed a more rapid response to the question that they may get if it was placed in the lower traffic - but "correct" forum. Its all very very VERY bendy is all this - everyone will always go round in circles including me as to how to best organise things. Forums Ive been a member of...................well - nothing ever irritated me more than having my posts moved around when they were "deemed" as wrongly placed. So - rather than move stuff round I ended up not moving stuff round Sometimes a post can contain two topics which kind of blend together and make it ambiguous as to which is the best forum. Also though - I know that there are obvious cases of ones which were misplaced. Im waffling - I fink I'll leave as is for a while longer yet - unless anyone posts here and tells me off for not changing it. Cheers Mark

I have to agree with Par5 about one major thing and that's people posting those "I don't know's" and other "general" comments that don't help out the person asking the question. If you don't know an answer don't post. BUT, if you don't know the answer but DO know where the answer can be found, then send that person to the answer!! But, just to post "I don't know" or I've never had that happen to me" is just posting to be posting. To me I just don't care how many posts you have, or how many stars you have behind your name if you can't help me. If I have a question and you have one star and can answer my question? Then you are "The Pro From Dover"!! But, if you post the "I don't know, can't help you" And you have 20 stars after your name then you don't deserve the title of Rock God or whatever else posting a zillion times gets you. And on the other subject of some people being lazy and posting in the wrong area, I look at it this way: If you can help the person with their problem then PM them and help them out. But, remind them that another area would be better for that type of question. Then ONE person can post in the thread the old "You should post this in this other area." We don't need 5 people posting the same directions to the person. Another bit about clutter is the "back and forth" banter that clutters up a thread. Sometimes you have to go 2 or 3 pages to get to the one person who has the answer to the question. So, for those of you who want to IM each other, fire up your AIM. K? Ok, now I feel better about posting all of this in the Lapidary Tips section.....what?.....It's not?.....It's what section?....are you sure it's ok tho?....whew! Ok thanks! I'll remember that next time!

As a newbie, I think the board is great the way it is. I must admit that being new, it is sometimes difficult to judge which section my posts should go under unless it is a specific question that I know should be in a certain spot. There does seem to be a tendancy for some of us newbies to post in the wrong areas occasionally, and it is only because we are not yet as tuned into the sight as most everyone else that has been doing this for years. I think in the end though, everyone here does a tremendous job with their posts and answers, so if there are any changes needed, it would be minimal and more along the lines of organization. Maybe the top thread in each section could be a rules thread that would explain what each section should be used for and what is expected - that way no one would be confused. Thanks to all for a great sight. Dave

Hi Mark, Thanks for the hard work you put in , I seems to be working as numbers grow and posts,
One thing I find is the helpfull nature of people using this site, just like a big family, I'm sure if anything is in the wrong place some one would give a hint or a link to the right section or even bring up a related topic ,I have done this and others have done this for me .
Thanks
