herchenxDefinitely iron garnets there. That's what causes the reddish brown slurry. Gem quality garnet has a gray slurry.

Thanks Starguy and rollingstone - I don't know how I lost track of this thread. I abandoned those garnets long ago, but need to hit up jamesp if he still has any of those garnets you showed above, they look sweet!

Haha, that's funny, I just looked at the date on the original post and saw it was 2012! Most of the replies are recent and it was fun to talk about garnets, so all is good! -Don

Mine are small but fine quality. But do check out Ebay for larger ones. If you can find a half pound or pound of larger glassy ones they can be run with a regular tumble of agate. Mine are old stock #5 grit that are no longer mined from this company(run video) emeraldcreekgarnet.com

those smalls from james are for grit, and excellent for that, but you're not gonna get stones out of them.

rollingstone yeah I started this again to see what's happening.......got some from james (grit, small) , got some (Brazil) from the Rock Shed, and some from eBay. They are making a mess in rotary. Some with brown (iron) others grey slurry. Very few clear grade.

And I never had any trouble with them disappearing when using them for filler over and over. Granted they are small, but high grade. I have about 5 pounds of them I have used as filler several times in the rotary and they still are not rounded well. Never had them disappear. If they are disappearing something is very wrong. I would not sell them unless they made good tumbles. Emerald Creek almandines are about as tough a garnet as you can find. Check out Ian's.

My garnets look like this when out of the bag before tumbled, some impurities like sand stone mixed in. And look like this after being used for filler for about 8 weeks in a rotary, most of the foreign softer stuff ground to nothing. Little shaping, they are very hard. Guess I better finish a load. Found the filler that was used for about 3 tumbles. The glass was mixed in with the garnets and was pea sized. These saw a lot of time as filler.

I've been using the ones that James sent me with zyamara,Montana, and some hard west tx stuff for about two weeks in 60/90.i use the same kind of PVC barrels James uses probably 30-35 lbs of material bashing those garnets, hasnt really phased them yet.i don't see them disintegrating any time soon.they may be small but very high quality Dave

Not sure if this’ll work or not. I have garnet that I collected from 2 places, the Omenica Mountains in northern British Columbia and the Austrian Alps in the Zillertal Valley. I bought a 4T vibratory tumbler and have run the Omenica stones in an 80 grit, approximately 5 tablespoons and 8 ozs. of plastic pellets. I have been wetting the mixture just a little with a sprayer. Total run time is about 12 hours. The smaller stones seem to be about right, but the larger stones aren’t even getting the micaceous matrix off. My intention is to get the stones clean first, then run them in finer grits to high shine polish, then mount them in a bracelet for my wife. I’m 100% inexperienced. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
